Mark made his initial move on the opening lap, pulling clear from the field and posting the fastest lap time of the day of 18.17 minutes. Frendo opened up a one-minute lead by the second lap. Gold Coaster David Whitney held off a fast-finishing Andrew Wegner (St Lucia) to take out second place with Wegner 40 seconds behind in third. "I made a break on the main fire road as Chris White (Figtree Pocket) was with me for a couple of kilometres," explained Frendo. "Then Maltman (James) was after me. I just kept going and kept up the same pace." Frendo completed the five-lap race in a time of 1:32:16, nearly 8.5 minutes clear of Whitney (1:40:39), who has just taken out the five-race Sunshine Series. Wegener's third place comes after recovering from a dislocated elbow six weeks earlier. Sixteen-year-old dual National U/17 Champion, James Maltman (Stretton), finished just outside the medals but will now focus his attention on the Downhill Championships on August 28. Fifth was White who rode his first race after being diagnosed with cancer similar to Tour De France winner, Lance Armstrong. White recognised his symptoms only after reading Armstrong's book, 'It's Not About the Bike'. Like Armstrong, White has returned to the sport he loves. Junior World Championship competitor Erica Oldfield, from Ipswich, once again dominated the elite women's race. "I wanted to get an early lead," said Oldfield, who led from start to finish. Second was Imogen Smith (The Gap), with fellow club rider, Anna Sheldon, in third. Oldfield heads off for altitude training next week in preparation for the Worlds in Italy at the end of August. Sheldon also used today's race as preparation for the World MTB Orienteering Championships in Slovakia in September. Riders will now prepare for the Workforce One 12 Hour Teams Challenge at Kooralbyn on August 6. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Sharon and Alan Payne
