Maybe it was the last chance to grab series points in the FTF 2004 winter series that dragged them all out there, but I can tell you one thing, had I not been the president I would have been at home in bed!! So with 95 riders on line facing an unknown 30km, 35km or 50km ride (not that we knew those distances before the race) the race that unfolded was truly amazing. Things started well albeit wet with the Elite, Expert, Sport A and Veteran riders attacking the short loop with fury. Considering the tracks were at times rivers and the puddles were up to half a wheel deep the pace was not let up. A FTF miss communication saw the top 15 riders do a bit of an extra climb but once back on track the leaders got back to business and finished the short loop strongly and pushed on to ride hard for the 35km long loop. Little did they know that at the top of the next climb which was some what of a long one awaited some a scene not often seen in racing. Murray Spink the eventual Elite winner said "its not often that you see white stuff everywhere when your racing, it took a bit to register it was snow" 2nd place but some minutes behind was Chris Winn with James Maebus placing 3rd. The Expert class saw Matt Ligtermoet gain his first win and stop Joel read from straight sweeping the series. In the 2nd race start Masters, Super Masters, Sport B, Under 17 men and expert Women were the first to discover the snow as they did 1 lap of the 35km long course. Over 1hr 40 it came down to just 6second in the Masters as Rob Amos nudged out Craig Peacock who is in his final preparations for the Simpson Desert Challenge. Tory Thomas won the Expert women over Jenny King who had a case of hypothermia just minutes after crossing the line. In the 3rd and final race start which had Sport Women, Under 15 and Fun Mixed, Simon Joiner was impressive in his first race winning the start and the fun class. Behind him Kylie Ellem was using the fire roads to her advantage to win here class and beat Roz Bradley for the first time in the series securing herself a 2nd for the effort. Luke Knox was impressive in U15 with a 30min win over his nearest rival who rode so hard he had no crutch in his pants as he crossed the line. Time to buy some lycra James. So that's it for the FTF Winter series in 2004. We now look forward to the summer with once again an 8 race series being hosted by the Victorian clubs. Last year $10,000 was handed out at the last race for the series place getters so we just wait and wonder how much there will be this time.
