Young rising star, Ryan Gittins from Toowoomba passed Series leader, Michael Skroblin of Brisbane in the fourth of five laps. Skroblin had lead on the single track parts of the course but the climbs helped Gittins make his decisive move. "I really thought he was going to catch back up," said Gittins at the finish. It is the first time Gittins has beaten his coach and mentor, Skroblin. "Yes, it feels good. It was a bit of a mental barrier," explained Gittins. Hard training at the beginning of the week followed by two days of rest was ideal preparation for Sunday's race. Skroblin finished in a disappointing fourth place which will see him loose his lead by 2 points to Gittins now on 210 points. Second place getter Josh Keep from Lismore will improve his position but missed Round 2 on the Gold Coast. Third placed Regan Jefcoate from Brisbane is also third in the Series with 158 points. In the women's event, Lee Schultz from Brisbane used her home town advantage to win over Erica Oldfield of Ipswich. Schultz and Oldfield rode together until the third of four laps where one of the climbs created a gap. "I'm happy," explained Schultz, "because I was feeling sick the last two days." Sharon Heap from the Gold Coast placed third with Brisbane's Tanya Britton fourth. Oldfield maintains her lead in the Series just 15 points ahead of Schultz. James Maltman from Brisbane won the U/19 in convincing style and even went on to ride a fifth lap like the Expert men. Maltman's time would have placed him in fourth position in the Expert men category. World Champion Downhiller, Chris Kovarik rode the cross country event in B Grade and placed third in a credible time of 1:20.12. Kovarik used the event for fitness and preparation for his upcoming season. He finished just 2 minutes behind current Downhill Series leader Tim Mann of Brisbane. Next event is Downhill Round 2 at Blackstone on 27 June www.nrgcycles.com.au. The next round of Cross Country is on 18 July at Mt Cotton contact Gillian_Duncan@hotmail.com for more information.
