Workforce One 12 hour Mountain Bike Team Challenge

Youngsters take out endurance ride
One of the youngest teams won first place overall in the 12 hour Mountain Bike Team Challenge at Kooralbyn on Saturday. Three riders from the Gold Coast, Zac MacAnally (14), Daniel Hallam (14) and David Whitney (17) combined with Ryan Gittins (16) from Toowoomba to complete 40 laps in the 12 hours of racing. The youngsters blitzed the field of 315 competitors from start to finish with Hallam riding the second fastest first lap. Teams came from Byron Bay to Noosa to compete in the annual event which has returned to the Kooralbyn circuit after 2 years at Fellcraig.
Hallam and Whitney are current series leaders in the state's Sunshine Series in their age division. Gittins is riding up two divisions and is current Series leader in Elite Men. MacAnally is currently third in his division after illness saw him pull out of the last round at Mt Cotton.
The individual men's winner was Andrew Wegener from St Lucia who completed 32 laps after having only 15 minutes break off the bike. Second was Stephen Vines from Bridgeman Downs and third was Chris Lander from Aspley who both managed 28 laps.
First woman was Imogen Smith from Sydney who would have placed 4th in the men's division after riding 25 laps. She beat last year's winner Trish Pullos by 2 laps. Pullos from Toowong had more experience but the flu had affected her preparation for the event. Third was Belinda McIntyre from Morayfield who was out to beat her personal best which had been 10 hours on the bike and this year she rode for 11 hours.
Three teams of unicyclists raced the cross country course. The winning team of Andrew Carter, National medalist, along with father and son combination, Rockley and James Boothroyd, rode a record 14 laps.
The most colourful team was a team of four women triathletes from Noosa who rode the course dressed as nuns. They managed to finish third in the women's teams event.
Mountain bike riders will ride the final round of Sunshine Series Cross Country at Castle Hill in Ipswich next Sunday. For more information contact Gavin Greenhill on 0438 292 537.
