Three stages for Taberlay

The penultimate Wildside stage started under drizzly skies but would start with a heated battle for the King of the Mountains prize at the top of the first hill. Just as with the ITT which had been run earlier that morning, category leaders Sid Taberlay (Avanti), Lisa Mathison (Ghost), Pete Hatton (Trek) and Rob Eva (SRAM - Rock Shox) duly took out the KOM prizes as well.
The race for this early prize put some pressure on the race and on the descent, a front group formed of Sid Taberlay, Peter Hatton and Chris Jongewaard (Avanti). The continuing bad weather made the 22km stage a little treacherous, notable victims were Aidan Lefman who crashed onto his knees at 45kph and another rider who lost consciousness in a fall.
At the sharp end of the race, stage 2 winner Jai Crawford (TIS-Avanti-cyclingnews.com) bridged to the leaders just before Jongewaard punctured (although he recovered to finish 3rd in Elite Men). Crawford applied the pressure and set up his team leader, Taberlay, for his third stage win.
Taberlay was happy with his win and was full of praise for his U23 teammate, Crawford, "he came up and asked me if I was feeling alright and I was, so he put in a turn that nearly blew me and Pete off the wheel!"
