Race against the mud

The rain that set in on Sunday afternoon was still with us on Monday morning and the time trial stage was set to be a quagmire. However, it wouldn't be the back-markers who would be riding in the mashed up trails, but the top riders as they set off in reverse order.
The fine mist was coming in very thick by the time the elite men rolled off the start-line and the course was a real bog...and, thanks to the rain, the winning time would end up a full two minutes slower than last year.
In the so-called race of truth, it was Sid Taberlay (Avanti) who stamped his authority on the race and put the last nail in the Wildside coffin, winning by a full minute over the next elite male, Paul Rowney (Yeti). The only man to come closer to Sid than Paul was Pete Hatton (Trek) who is really finding his legs in the late stages of this stage race. "Hatto" clocked a time of 14:54 to win the U23 category and come within 52 seconds of the stage winner and tour leader, Taberlay.
On a stage where most riders took a spill, Taberlay stayed upright. Others behind weren't so lucky. Chris Jongewaard (Avanti), who was third elite male, took a few spills and was really surprised at how messed up the course was after three-hundred riders had ridden the course, "It was so messed up! The singletrack would have been good if it was rideable. I saw Kiraly, my 30sec man, go through a big puddle and I took the same line but it was WRONG. I took a big dive, got muddy water in my mouth and everything! There were really no good lines."
In the other categories, it was a perfect opportunity for the overall leaders to exert their dominance, notably, Lisa Mathison (Ghost) took a four minute win over Sam Jesney and Niki Gudex.
It is worth noting too that the ITT wasn't the only obstacle for the morning, there was also a small matter the compulsory 'cruise stage' of 15km was a ball-breaker with thick misty-rain, poor visibility and some fairly challenging gravel roads to negotiate. Even the tiny weekend retreat town of Trial Harbour offered little respite from the weather...the afternoon stage would be a struggle for many.
