Home at last

Finally the sun shined down on Wildside and the riders could enjoy their last stage, out of picturesque Strahan, in perfect conditions. The race organisation supplied a helicopter for the media and the mass, police-controlled start was a real spectacle. The riders were enjoying their time, waving up to us and on the outskirts of town, the elite riders organised a Mexican Wave which was quite something.
After the control period finished, pressure was applied, namely race leader, Sid Taberlay (TIS-Avanti-cyclingnews.com) pushed the pace but, with the main contenders stayed together.
Just before the race hit the singletrack, Chris Jongewaard (TIS-Avanti-cyclingnews.com) took over the pace-making but Nick Kiraly (SRAM-Rock Shox-Mongoose) was quick to follow. Kiraly then took the front in the technical stuff winding up and over the hills.
They were all together as the race hit the beach-section but an attack by Taberlay and teammate Jai Crawford hurt the bunch, as a few lost contact, namely Rob Eva (SRAM-Rock Shox) who was carrying the helmet camera for the stage. They didn't get far and the counter came from Jongewaard who was joined by Kiraly soon after. Then Pete Hatton (Trek) took over the pace making as Kiraly and Jongewaard came back and gaps started to open up. Notably, the veteran comeback kid, John Gregory, managed to hang onto the leaders and would stay there until the finish.

Apparently our hovering chopper wasn't doing any favours for the racers as many commented later at the difficulty involved in battling the buffeting winds as well as the constant attacks.
After a flurry of attacks it was Stage 2 winner Crawford who got a gap only 300m before the end of the beach section. With the Avanti boys shutting it down from behind, Crawford opened a big gap that was nearly two minutes by the road-finish in Strahan. In his last MTB race, Crawford was happy to pick up a win and was humble to the end, suggesting that he "only won today because it wasn't technical...today just suited me really well."
Behind, the guys were content to roll in and wait for the sprint and tour-leader Sid Taberlay (TIS-Avanti-cyclingnews.com) did the job for the boys by sitting on the front and keeping the pace high. His selflessness paid off though as Jongewaard got the sweet ride and came into the last chicane first to win over Al Farley, Perren Delacour and Pete Hatton (who confirmed his dominance in the U23 category, which he won by a slender minute over Trent Lowe-Spoke(n)-SRAM-Rock Shox - Yeti).
This meant that not only did Jai Crawford pick up the win, but his TIS-Avanti-cyclingnews.com teammate, Taberlay won the tour - only adding to the sweetness of his three stage win. By the way, this was made sickly sweet by the two stage wins of their other Avanti (non-TIS) teammate Jongewaard.
Further back, Wildside race title-sponsor and helmet-cam man, Rob Eva finished three minutes down on the main group. Despite losing this time to his main rival and ex-AIS mountainbiker, John Gregory, Eva still managed to win the veteran category by twenty mins in a time that gave him 9th position overall. There's life in the old dog yet! But watch out for Gregory who may make a return to MTB at this year's national champs.
Lisa Mathison (Ghost) continued her dominating ways and was really happy to finish in the sun, "That was really fun. The weather was great and the race was fast. It has been a hard few days but great training - I can't wait to get overseas now!"
In Masters, superman Hans Dielacher finally lost a stage but still won his category by a comfortable 17mins. Meanwhile Tracey Angrove locked in her overall Women's Vets win by taking out a solid second place in the final stage.
