Frendo narrowly defeated Sunshine Series winner, Ryan Gittins, from Toowoomba. Gittins along with World Junior competitor, Josh Keep from Lismore led the field for the first three of six laps before Frendo took charge. "I was just waiting," explained Frendo. "They got away on the first climb. It was long." Frendo was impressed with 16 year old Gittin's form after the Championship. "He is three years younger and in the next few years he'll be pretty quick," added Frendo. Gittins should have raced in his age division but obtained special permission to race two grades above his Under 17 classification. Third was Steven Vines from Bridgeman Downs who took Keep's position when back pain forced him to withdraw from the competition. Keep preferred to stay away from injury before heading overseas this week to compete in the World Junior Championships on 10 September in Les Gets in France. The Expert Women's division was thrown open when a virus stopped World Junior competitor, Erica Oldfield from Ipswich from competing. National Veteran Champion, Sharon Heap from the Gold Coast blitzed Veronica Lane and Lee Schultz from Brisbane with a 24 minute lead. Gold Coast competitors also took gold in the Under 17 division with Daniel Hallam and in Masters with multisport athlete, Brett Stevens, winning by 4 minutes. Southside RATS Club of Brisbane took the Super Masters win with 52 year old Allan Mumford still recovering from a training injury. Southside's talented James Maltman was outdone by Alice Spring's Daniel Johnston in the Under 19 division. Competitors will now prepare for the start of the MTBA National Series which begins in Cairns on the 6 November.
