What a bunch of creeps. Questioning a ruling that they know has no chance of being overturned just to make the higher placed rider look bad, regardless of the truth.
How about this: They hire a coach who doesn't make Contador turn himself absolutely inside-out on the first half of that brutal course and he would have earned third, possibly second.

Cadel's Injury
I have nothing but the utmost respect Cadel for all that he has done for cycling with his stellar cycling performances over recent years.
However, I have to say that, in hindsight, I'm disappointed that he was allowed to compete at the Olympics with the knowledge that he was injured. Surely, there was another "fully fit" Australian rider, or two, that could have been used in either (or both) the road race and the time-trial that could have helped get a medal for Australia? For example, maybe Adam Hansen could have been used in the road race as a domestique, or as a breakaway option for the team. Lets not forget he is the current Australian time trial champion, so I'd guess he'd might have even had a chance for a good showing in the time trial too?

NRC Calendar
I do not know the gentleman promoting the Elk Grove race but I know Thad Fischer to be a first class promoter of cycling events and assume the same for the Elk Grove team.
My observation from a fairly limited experience with cycling but having extensive experience with amateur baseball is as follows: USA Cycling licenses riders and events, decides the schedule, but doesn't seem to be much in touch with the whole process on a day to day basis. Any organization of national stature should intuitively know which events have historically been staples of the sport. They also should know which events generate revenue for the teams and riders participating.
One point also, why does USA Cycling have so much trouble getting events that they sanction to report results? My experience with MSBL, (Men's Senior Baseball League), which is the largest adult league in the country is that even in large tournaments they can post results as soon as games finish. Why does it take USA Cycling weeks sometimes to update results?
Also, I defy anyone to explain the convoluted points system they use. I have some experience with racers from the US racing in Belgium and other parts of Europe and I can find results from any race within an hour or two of the finish.
In summation I would submit that USA Cycling needs to get their act together and not make it more difficult for guys who promote and fund the races in the US. They are the folks who put their necks on the line for the sport.

Phil Liggett encounter
This is in response to Allan Nicholls letter regarding Team Liggett and the meeting with Phil Liggett at Alp d’Huez. I was one of the "Team Liggett" members who are a bunch of 40 something year olds from Perth Western Australia. We made the trip to France to follow the Tour and to cheer on Cadel and the rest of the Aussies.
When we considered a team name and design for our tour jerseys we all thought about our impressions of watching the Tour from Australia over the years. Phil Liggett was and is a standout memory for all of us and continues to be the voice of the Tour in Australia. Despite his numerous Liggetisms (who wouldn't stuff up over 5 hours of commentary for three weeks solid!). When we thought about the Tour, we thought about Phil.
There is obviously a lot of affection for Phil around the world as wherever we wore our "Phil" jerseys people responded positively. And as Allan wrote, meeting Phil was a great pleasure and he did truly seem rapt to be featured and loved the jersey we presented to him.
Seeing Johaan Bruyneel stick his head out of the Verus trailer and piss himself laughing at Phil in his Jersey was a great sight.
We had a great tour, saw some great cycling, if you want to read about our trip following the tour around the Pyrenees and Alps (including spending the day with Jean Marie LeBlanc on the road to Alp 'd Huez), check out our blog.
And to Phil; thanks for the inspiration and thanks for being a good bloke.
PS: Not sure where Paul Sherwin was but the rumour was that he was off "losing huge chunks of time"!!

Phil Liggett encounter #2
I'm happy for you Allan and I'm sure Phil is the "sweet and gentle man" as you say. Often it's the personal that creates the strongest memory. He has a wonderful voice for cycling and can take credit for introducing many to our sport. However all things must pass and just like Murray Walker found, I believe Phil has passed his prime. He is increasingly getting it wrong. Either the names of the riders, the teams or misinterpreting a move in a race etc. For those of us who have followed the sport for many years we remember fondly Phil's calls of the TdF in particular. However I believe it's time for him to move on now and let others be blooded and carry on the great tradition he started.
Speaking as an Aussie, it would be good for SBS TV who use Phil and Paul for the TdF coverage in Oz to break the cultural cringe and further develop home grown talent. Two commentators used in the recent TdF would be a good start. They were knowledgeable and can read a race, giving the insights equally to the cognoscenti and those who enjoy the travelogue aspect of the race.

British Olympic track medals
Australian track cyclist Ryan Bailey is surely being ironic when he says,
"We Australians have got a lot of heart. But we don't have the funding of the British. They have the Australian sports scientist who was ours (Grant White), they've got a German sprint coach who was one of the most tactical riders ever (Jan van Eiden)," he added. "Basically they can buy whatever they want whenever they want."
Isn't Ryan the product of the AIS, set up in response to Australia's lack of medals at the Montreal Olympics in 1976?

Therapeutic Use Exemptions - please explain

You are absolutely right. It's amazing how many professional cyclists have asthma. When I was a kid, my classmates with asthma sat out gym class, didn't run track and didn't participate in team sports. Funny how professional cycling, one of the most gruelling cardiovascular disciplines around, is full of asthmatics!
You would think that riding your bike for 6 hours a day for 20 days in a row would weed out all those athletes who can't breathe. Thank God that TDE's allow these athlete's to follow their true passion.

Therapeutic Use Exemptions - please explain #2
Stephen, do you know what training and racing at the professional level can do to the bodies' immune system? The recovery time is the key element. Asthma, as well as other upper respiratory aliments can extremely hamper a cyclist. How many cyclists do you know that has that "cough"?

Truvativ HammerSchmidt
I just read your tech article on the Truvativ HammerSchmidt setup.
Somewhat surprisingly, I see not a single word in the article about the Swiss-made Schlumpf drives, which are essentially identical other than shifting method (and pre-date the Truvativ setup by many, many years).
I believe Florian Schlumpf deserves at least a mention, especially since there's no doubt in my mind where Truvativ got their inspiration (and much of their design).

Carlos Sastre
I find this debate about Cadel Evans' TDF tactics very strange. Yes, Cadel favours the "Indurain" tactic of limiting losses in the mountains and relying on the TT's for time gains. He is a solid, yet not especially gifted, climber, a more than passable time triallist (but not yet in the Indurain, Armstrong or Ullrich class) but he is consistent, recovers well and posesses a fine racing brain and understanding of his own strengths, weaknesses and limitations.
When I see Cadel Evans race I don't see the conservative wheelsucker who races to profit from the weakness of others. I see a fine all round rider who is doing his best to win the biggest bike race on the planet in the way he thinks best. He didn't lose the TDF because he didn't follow Sastre. He will have only too well aware of Sastre's strength in the final TT of GT's and limited his losses as best he could. He lost to Sastre because he wasn't as good when it mattered and I see no reason to criticise him for that.
I look forward to seeing a faster and stronger Evans do battle next year with Sastre, the Schlecks, Contador, Kohl and all the others.

Cadel Evans and the Beige Jersey
At last! David Thompson is the voice of reason! He asks all the Cadel critics "Why aren't you wearing the maillot Jaune?"
People who say Cadel has no personality, and is a wheel sucker who never attacks totally miss the point. The guy has finished top ten in every Tour he's competed in and has finished second twice. Now compared to you and me, that's a superhuman effort. Why compare him to Armstrong? We all know Armstrong was a freak who in reality no one can compare! Valverde? Yeah he attacks and wins stages but where did he come overall? Sastre? He was the better man. He attacked on Alpe d'huez and no one could go with him. It wasn't just Evans who couldn't keep up!
And for those wondering why it’s always Australians who defend Cadel? Perhaps it’s simply because we watch him more closely than say an American (who'd be watching Vande Velde) or a Spaniard (watching Sastre) would! For the same reason the yanks defend Armstrong, just as the Spaniards would defend Valverde, Contador, and Sastre! It's not rocket science people!
