The Federation doesn't need a clear cut positive sample to ban someone. This isn't Federal court - the substantial evidence can be included. This, as well as the scientific evidence and sworn testimony of Frankie Andreu and Suzanne Sonye, was enough that they saw it fit to suspend him for two years. The AAA/CAS has rules in place that allow for a suspension to be handed down with evidence such as this; in this case, I say rightly so.
The only thing that smells fishy is that he was allowed to race all this time. He rides a bike for a living. He's the one that needs to play by the rules. He obviously couldn't keep his mouth shut. Enjoy your two years, Leogrande. Now you can focus on your tattoo shop!

I won't argue any of Tom Alrichs' reasoning in this case. I will correct him on his implications of 'federations' playing fair. The 'federations' have nothing to do with this. The jurisdiction is USADA, the US Anti-Doping Agency. USA Cycling had nothing to do with this. USADA is independent of the sports federations, and USA Cycling is obligated to accept USADA decisions. I think this is a valuable distinction to make in the fight against doping.

Basso diary
After reading at a glance many of the letters regarding Cyclingnews' newest columnist, Ivan Basso, I decided to actually read his column, or at least I did until I fell asleep, only to reawaken to try again. I then realised that anything Basso says is just going to a slightly different worded account of events he'll offer at any press conference or interview he does, after asking anyone close by or his doctor to pass the thesaurus.
That, and the fact it's going to be some way short of what he really thinks, knows and feels, because in my opinion he keeps the truth far from the surface, or at least just plays the cliched straight bat to any tricky questions.
Maybe to spice things up the column should contain readers' questions, with a healthy combination of the 'what's your favourite colour' type to add something a touch more probing, or maybe an interview once every few months with David Walsh or Greg Lemond, or some lively debate over his numbers and values from the 2006 Giro, 2005 Tour/Giro, etc.
Just so we are clear, I think it's not much short of a disgrace he has a column, and such a lovely contract, but accepting this fact I can't wait for the Riccardo Ricco column, and some short stories from Stefan Schumacher and maybe even Bernard Kohl to fill in the blanks during the off season (no disrespect to the cyclo-crossers and six day riders intended).
Here's hoping he gets the Astana 2008 treatment from ASO for 2009, and enjoys the target testing he will have to undergo for the rest of his career, which he does, right?

Come on, Chris!
Horner is a solid guy and one of my heroes too, but I couldn't really give a rip if he sports a bucket on his training rides or not. Was Merckx setting a bad example? I dare you to find me one single picture, and there are millions, of him wearing a lid.
How about Boardman? I can't imagine what it must be like to actually look at a picture of a cyclist and even take note of something so trivial that does not have anything to do with you. Find me a kid on the street who has Horner as his role model, by the way.
This "nanny state" attitude drives me nuts. I actually had a rider I didn't even know pass me going the other way on an empty open road and yell, "where's your helmet!" What the...? I was walking out of Starbucks the other day when a fat guy eating a pastry and coffee piled high with whip actually asked me why I didn't wear a helmet. You could only imagine what I wanted to say. Everybody stop it... I'm fully insured!

Is Kohl kidding?
Is Oleksandr Alesinskyy seriously defending Landis and Hamilton? I'm sorry but I have a dead twin inside me and Landis' lame excuses don't stack up. You're absolutely right about Basso, Ulrich and Boonen... but Landis and Hamilton received a two-year ban for doping - there is no changing that, no matter how you look at it.
Landis was soundly proven as was Hamilton because there positives stood. On your logic Schuey should be allowed to race this season (even though his team no longer exists and no other team would touch him) because of his new found list of excuses (which miraculously appeared as soon as the lawyer did).
And that's the problem with these three; unlike Basso and Ullrich, who just went away quietly into retirement or their ban, these three are causing no end of damage by allowing overpaid lawyers to tear into the anti-doping processes of the UCI and WADA.
The fact is that WADA needs to get better at what it does and the best way for that to happen is to work hand-in-hand with the drug companies, as the French Lab did with the CERA tests. That way the riders are the ones that are behind the testers, instead of the other way around.

Is Kohl kidding? #2
Mr. Oleksandr Alesinskyy's letter saddens me. This is a classic apologist. An ostrich with his head in the sand. These are not courts of law. Professional cycling is essentially a children's game that grown men get paid ridiculous amounts of money to play. I snort with laughter every time I hear Oleksandrs rage indignantly about the rights of the riders. The vast majority of the cycling world sees Oleksandr's letter for what it is: the last throes of the old regime trying to defend its ill deeds. The game is up.
Basso, Ullrich, Sinkewitz, Landis, and Boonen were not "convicted" of doping... but they are dopers. Every one knows this. There was no "proof" that Basso and co. doped? At one time there was no "proof" that the earth was round... but it was always true. I am a "liberal," I am all for the rights of the accused, but these are grown men playing at cycling for fame and fortune. I have no problem banning these cheats with the evidence we have. Good riddance to them and those like them.

Popo's holiday
It seems Popovych has had a nice two-year holiday at 700,000 euro a year on Silence-Lotto. I think he will be nicely rested to sit on the front for Armstrong in next year's Grand Tours that Lance decides to ride.
Is it just me or could have Cadel gotten the same result if he just had a soigneur, the bus driver and some power bars; at least Lotto would have saved a heap of cash. Hopefully the Ukranian wonder boy will at least send Cadel a christmas card.

Schumacher off the radar?
It's been a little quiet on the Schumacher front, so I would like to know what, if anything, is going on with him regarding his doping denial and his "voided" contract?
As for the possibility that he did NOT dope, his reasoning sounds kind of strange, almost as if he wasn't saying that he didn't dope but that the testing was not according to the rules. The authorities are the "cheaters," not him. Let's call it the "Schumacher Line," since it seems that we might hear about this one for quite a while.
It would be nice if Cyclingnews could step up here and do the best they could to present the facts concerning the actual testing rules pertaining to his situation. I am confused about his claim that his sample was retested, when I thought the sample that was tested was a blood sample that had been set aside and was tested for the first time, admittedly after the Tour was concluded but based on some kind of criteria identifying a suspicious blood or urine profile.
However, even if it had been tested previously, what would be wrong with retesting it? It's hard to understand how Mr. Schumacher's results are less valid than Mr. Kohl's, his roomate.
Personally, the proof that convinces me of his cheating is that Mr. Fabian Cancellara had 40 seconds on the field in the final time trial, but some how, Mr. Schumacher wins by 20 seconds, almost identical to the first time trial, in terms of time on the second place finisher. I don't think this is possible.
I hope you will be reporting on this situation soon.

Rock-n-Rudy Racing
In response to the various letters about Mr. Ball:
I don't know how many of you that have written about Mr. Ball have actually met him, spent any time around him, or have even spoken to him, but I've done all three (at races, and at our local coffee shops).
I can say, without reservation, that Mr. Ball was as friendly, polite, and fun as could be. He's a quite engaging and nice guy, with a good sense of humour. Seems to me there's some "image hate" going on here, without anything concrete to back it up. His, and his team's, style may not be for everyone, but it seems quite unfair to diss the guy on a personal level, especially if you've no actual experiences with him.

Viagra - a doping product?
Well, it will make you go harder... and for a longer time. But if you go too hard for too long, you had better see your doctor!
I also wonder: if a doctor can be banned from sport for supplying performance enhancing drugs to athletes, can the doctor then be allowed back into sport for helping athletes stop going too hard for too long?

Viagra - a doping product? #2
Viagra - just the thing for those hard training sessions.
Perhaps it's been discovered that Viagra isn't actually a performance enhancer (in respect of cyling anyway) but it does aid recovery by preventing riders from rolling out of bed. Can we now anticipate a disproportionate number of riders getting medical exemptions (a la exercise-induced asthma) based on errectile disfunction?
We should be told the facts - straight up.

Viagra - a doping product? #3
Chris - you are quite correct that this is indeed the concern with viagra (ie: that viagra works as performance enhancing drug by giving an unfair aerodynamic advantage rather than a biological enhancement).
It apparently works in much the same way as the banned (or restricted use of) high hand position in the aerobars for time-trialling - as recently exploited by Landis and Leipheimer. It permits a leading appendage of the body to break the wind for the rest of the "lower torso" that follows, thereby reducing air disturbance and drag overall.
It has also been proven to give enhancements in other sports requiring aerodynamic body positions - particularly downhill ski racing and ski jumping.
Note that it is not useful in all sports and, in particular, studies have shown that it renders poor results for swimmers, as it actually increases drag in that sport. Note also that recent studies have cast doubt over the effectiveness of this drug's use (in cycling) and have suggested that any aerodynamic advantage is more than offset by reduced blood supply to the legs and heart.
