Confused #2
On July 15th, Mr. Brian Hanawalt wrote: “Prior to the cancer he could not finish a Tour. After he came back he was able to dominate the world’s best (while the competitors doped) and he was reportedly clean. This causes me much confusion.”
Mr. Hanawalt and others would do well to remember that Lance was a world class triathlete by the age of 16, and once focused on cycling, became one of the youngest ever professional road race champions in 1993. These facts point to real talent which may or may not have been fully realized prior to Armstrong’s fight with cancer. In his memoirs, Lance alludes to the fact that he didn’t take his job seriously enough before he became ill.
I have no facts to refute insinuations that Lance was a doper during his TdF run (just as no one has any proof that he WAS), but to imply that he never showed any form, ability, or talent before his cancer diagnosis is patently false.

Confused #3
In response to Mr. Hanawalt's letter about Lance Armstrong;
I am not going to debate whether Lance Armstrong took performance enhancing drugs because we live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty! Don't get me wrong, I am not an ardent Armstrong fan. Quite the contrary, the year he won the tour by just a few seconds, we were rooting for someone else to win in this household. But, Lance has been one of the most tested athletes in the history of sport and has never tested positive. Do you really think that those former teammates of LA's went to another team and got inferior drugs and/or doctor advice? If they were doping while on Postal/Discovery, they would have known if something was "fishy" with their "new" doctors or drugs.
It is more likely the other way around. The former teammates knew the machine that Postal/Discovery was and knew unless they cheated, there was no way to beat them. They knew they weren't going to out-train Lance, they knew they weren't going to come up with better strategies, they didn't have a shot in the time trials, so what else could they do? Get an unnatural advantage.
Using your logic, Mr. Hanawalt, I guess Christian Vande Velde must be doped to the gills, how else would he be able to compete at this level with racers AGAIN being kicked out for doping? I know he is on a team that tests something like 20 times more than what the UCI is testing, but he must be cheating.

I recommend you get a copy of Edward Coyle's article titled: Improved muscular efficiency displayed as Tour de France champion matures in J Appl Physiol 98: 2191-2196, 2005. Here Coyle outlines much of the metabolic adaptations that Armstrong made from ages 21 to 28. I think you will find it most elucidating and your confusion cleared.

Hi Bruce,
Lance lost 10 kilos of weight and none of his power. He was a monster bike rider before cancer, a Classics winner. With the weight loss, and new training, and building solely around the TDF, he became its greatest rider.

Consistency please
Just a couple of points re ASO/Astana/doping results:
Astana were not ejected from the Tour on publication of A test results last year. There is no inconsistency from ASO in this respect of their handling of Barloworld and Liquigas this year.
It remains to be seen what ASO choose to do regarding invitations to next year's event. IF ASO do not withhold invitations from Barloworld and Liquigas (and any other team who have a riders' A sample return positive) then I would agree that their move against Astana this year would appear to be purely vindictive.

Damages paid
When a rider like Riccò stands on the podium, not once but twice, knowing that his stage wins are the result of doping, what is the damage he inflicts, not only on the sport but on his fellow competitors? What might that moment on the podium be worth for sponsors, future sponsorship and advertising? Never mind what it might mean to a rider personally.
Sure you can transfer the money earned for the stage win, you can Fed X the medal after the fact but standing on that podium, taking you place in history, I'm sure has a quantifiable dollar value. Riccò should have to pay Valverde and Efimkin damages.
Riders found guilty of doping should be made to pay damages to their fellow riders and should be jailed for fraud, in addition to suspensions and loss of sponsorship. If funds for damages are not available, the riders teams/sponsors should cough up the difference. Creating a little pressure from within the system would be a good thing.
Oh, and I will expect the ASO to ban Saunier Duval-Scott for next years Tour for the embarrassment that their riders have caused.

Dave Russell passes away
I am sorry to hear that Dave has passed away. I lived in Slough in the eighties and then moved to Twyford and occasionally went into his shops.
He was always very friendly and helpful no matter how small the purchase and I often think of him when I walk past his old shop to the station. It is a major regret that by the time I could afford to have a frame built Dave had long since retired.

David Miller on Riccò
After the unfortunate events of Ricardo Riccò, David Millar told Cyclingnews. "It is just amazing that he is that irresponsible and doesn't have any love or care for the sport."
Please David, I get that you are trying to be clean, but please do not make yourself out to be a saint because don't you remember?
David Millar confessed to the use of EPO in 2001 and 2003. He blamed his use of EPO on stress, in particular having failed to win the prologue in the 2003 Tour and having been defeated by Jan Ullrich in the 2001 world time trial championship, despite having raised his arms in the finale in confidence of winning. I would prefer to get the opinions of riders who have never been dirty, rather than those who have been, and are trying to drive attention away from their own sorted past/present by screaming the loudest at others. So rather than share your slanted opinion, David, wouldn't it be better to be sympathetic with the man? You made the same mistake.

Millar: 'Riccò was too good to be true'
Doesn’t Mr. Miller realize that Riccò is indeed the new generation of David Millers of the past who thought they could get away with doping? Interesting how caustic Mr. Miller is toward Riccò for his actions when he himself reaped countless rewards while doing the same thing years ago.
Do not get me wrong - I do not support Riccòs actions. I just think Miller and Zabel and Riis and all the others who confessed to doping might be better served by keeping their mouths shut during such times as, quite frankly, who the hell are they to talk?

Doping, ASO vs UCI, what is going on?
To the Editor,
I'd like to get a few things off my chest.
Firstly of course, doping. Why is it that there isn't a life ban for using performance enhancing drugs? It is ridiculous that a rider like Ricardo Riccò can do so much damage to cycling and then come back when he is still only 26. I strongly believe that riders would think twice if there was life bans put in place. Also let’s have one rule for all; if a rider from your team is caught doping in any race the team should leave the race. I realise that it may seem unfair to the other cyclists who haven't done anything wrong, however desperate times call for desperate measures, and peer pressure is another weapon to use against doping.
Secondly, teams what have you done? By siding with the ASO and other grand tour organisers, you have opened up a Pandora’s box that we are already starting to see glimmers of e.g. the manager who voiced his concerns that French riders were hardly being tested. The must be involvement from an independent body, or corruption will further put cycling into chaos.
A message to the ASO, pull your head in! Yes you have the biggest race in the world but that will mean nothing when nobody cares about cycling anymore. Stop having double standards when choosing to allow certain teams to participate in your races.
A message to the UCI, stop being so stubborn! The ProTour concept is a good one in principle, but you have to accept that there are flaws, and that change is needed to satisfy everyone. Like any leader who doesn’t listen to its people, you will fall over at this rate, as the people are voting for the other guy.

Contador is still the best out there along with Astana. He would be leading the race with Cadel trailing like last year. Speaking of last year, same doping problems and drama. That and Astana not racing is why I am not watching the Tour.

How does Andy Schleck "kill all the moves"?
In the photo of Vande Velde being shadowed by A. Schleck, the caption implies that A. Schleck somehow ruins Vande Velde's move. I don't get it - certainly Schleck isn't slowing him down any, and if they stay away, what's bad for Vande Velde about that (Andy is not a threat to him on GC)? It doesn't make it any easier for anyone they left behind to bridge up, and if Frank Schleck does (and gets his brother's help) but doesn't bring any other GC contenders with him, then Vande Velde still puts time into those who didn't. And if they all bridge up, then they would have done that without Andy being up ahead with Vande Velde anyhow (probably easier since he would have helped the bigger group more). So how does Andy Schleck following that Vande Velde move kill that move?
