Great day for cycling

Dear Cyclingnews,

I wanted to write and thank you for the article about Team Type 1. Those guys are such an inspiration to every person with diabetes. I have seen what people with diabetes have to go through on a daily basis, and to think that they are going pro, and aiming for races such as the Tour of California is phenomenal.

It would be a great team with a message, and a positive spin on bike racing for a change. I hope to see these guys in Cali, and all the big races in the US, and the world so that the we can see the technology used to succeed, and bring some joy to cycling fans again.

Again, what a positive, inspiring story, and it will even help regular old guys like me to overcome my obstacles, and get out on the bike.

Sydor's consistency

Chuck ,

You’re right on that (CN letters December 27, 2007)! I first saw Sydor race in 1996, and I know what you mean; a real trooper. Then this past September at Interbike I saw her inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of-Fame.

I hope the great ambassadors of the sport (Dave Weins, Tinker, Steve Tilford, Sydor) keep racing for a long time.

Merry Christmas UCI: here's a gift-wrapped clue

Why don't you try to start a movement to add cyclo-cross to the winter Olympic Games? It's an increasingly popular branch of the cycling family, it's exciting for absolute beginner fans, and it might jump start overall cycling popularity and renew interest in the 'hard-man's sport’.

CA awards misses national series

Bravo to the FRF Couriers/NSWIS Cycling Team!

It was brave to invest your time, money and resources into a UCI Continental Team and your commitment has boosted cycling in Australia. I am sure that others recognise your efforts and hope not only that you will continue, but that many others will see how it can be done and follow your lead.

Thank you

Dear Cyclingnews,

Thank you for your reporting, the rider diaries, equipment reviews, Fitness Q&A, and especially for your love of cycling.

Yes, professional cycling has issues - lots of issues. But riding ( and sometimes racing ) a bicycle is a beautiful thing and Cyclingnews.com is an essential part of this.

Happy Holidays and looking forward to a Great New Year!

Ivan Basso - why no tough questions?

Dear Cyclingnews,

I wasn't impressed by your interview with Ivan Basso. Whilst journalists are not part of the doping problem, they can help with the solution.

Good on Basso for helping a charity, if you want to publicise the charity, go for it. Yet Basso is a banned cheat. Arguably, the revelations about his"attempted"doping were a factor in driving Discovery Channel out of our sport.

We're still in the dark as to what he was up to with Dr. Fuentes. There are a lot of questions I'd like to ask. But why did you not seem to ask any tough questions? Why give him such an easy ride?

As long as journalists get starstruck and offer seemingly uncritical interviews with cheats, cleaning up our sport can only be harder.

Cadel Evans - returns to training #1

Timothy,

Time for a chill pill. It's a slow time of year for cycling and it's better to be in the news to discuss training and future aims rather than another drugs controversy. Also, as you should know, every athlete needs a rest to train effectively, especially if you have been the most consistent professional rider throughout the year, placed second and fourth in two major tours and raced from February to late October.

Two to three weeks off to recharge the batteries is not only necessary for the legs, but essential for the brain as well. I am sure that any professional rider of Cadel's experience knows how to train for their major aims.

Cadel Evans - returns to training #2

C'mon Timothy, Give us a break with your home-spun admonishments:"That, my friend, is how to win the Tour. Don't just follow, Cadel...LEAD!"Greg LeMond clearly showed there is only one day on which you must lead the Tour to win it.

Cadel Evans - returns to training #3

Once again Cadel Evan's commitment, tactical sense and judgement is being questioned. As Evans himself has said many times before, his strength is his consistency. Why don't people just accept that?

Evans has admitted to making one or two errors over three weeks which probably cost him a win in the Tour de France. As he has also stated many times before, if he did not attack it was because he was incapable of increasing his effort or was worried about draining himself too far from the finish of a stage.

Evans has ridden three Tours and improved his result each time. I believe that Cadel learned some important lessons last year. Barring accidents or illness during the 2008 Tour, I believe he will at least finish on the podium and will probably win it.

He is constantly underrated and misunderstood, but I think this is to his advantage as the media and so called sports journalists still don't know what to make of him.

Cadel is his own man. Quietly confident is no handicap and a refreshing change from the usual overly dramatic types that passes for elite athlete commentary. He knows what his is capable of and what he has to do, better than anyone else.

By the way Mr Schinsky, Cadel was not training after the 2007 Tour…he was still racing.

Cadel Evans - returns to training #4

Timothy Schinsky must have some considerable track record in training and advising Tour de France winners to speak with such authority on Cadel Evans and his ’08 Tour de France preparation.

Unlike many, many other Tour contenders, Cadel didn't just hang up his wheels for the rest of the year and bask in his achievements for 2007. He did admirable rides in the Tour of Spain, World Championships and Tour of Lombardy, and clinched the ProTour title, all of which could be seen as preparation for 2008.

He would have taken a well-deserved rest and then begun his non-racing preparation for 2008, using his own considerable experience, the knowledge he has gained of just how his body responds to training and racing and the advice of experienced coaches.

I doubt very much Mr Schinsky would have been contacted during this or any other period of preparation.

I'm just an amateur racing dabbler, but even I know that you cannot train for a race 364 days away with any kind of effectiveness.

Let's not forget, Cadel has been a top professional rider for many years, and you don't come second in the Tour de France by being a lucky amateur. I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing.

Cadel Evans - returns to training #5

"Give us something to read, substance perhaps?"Tim Schinsky is very demanding for a guy that doesn't pay anything to read Cyclingnews. Although I'm not a journalist, I understand that there is really nothing stopping a creative and talented person from going out there and writing their own stories.

Perhaps instead of demanding things, Tim can write the stories he craves for himself.

Helmets belong on heads

“Wear your helmet like you want your loved ones to” - what an awesome statement, one of the helmet companies should pick up on this and use it.

I just fell of my cyclo-cross bike, at almost a dead stop and cracked my Bell helmet at the left temple completely through. Except for some very minor road rash on my chin, no other injury! I could be either dead right now or eating through an I.V.

Still amazes me to see professionals in their training group rides not wearing helmets. Helmets are so light now I sometimes have to reach up to check that I put it on.

Got to go now, my new Bell just arrived…

Armstrong on Landis #1

I have to agree with Doug (CN letters December 27, 2007). It appears that any evidence is admissible by the authorities who test the athletes. Dubiously flawed or otherwise.

Look at the Iban Mayo debacle, a disgrace and the throwing out of this kangaroo court decision is the only decent thing to do. The real world would call it"Lack of Admissible Evidence", except in cycling, they will keep testing until they find someone to agree with the first finding. And who better that the lab who tested the A sample?

If it were not so sad it would be laughable. Floyd Landis was guilty in the opinion of this lab testing him, from the minute the first test was done, and on any subsequent sample. The UCI has a responsibility to its members, not only to punish the guilty within the guidelines and rules, but also to preserve the integrity of the riders concerned. It is not good enough to hail them, the cyclists as heroes for years, but when an air of suspicion surrounds them to step away and be among the first to lead the witch hunt, crying villains louder than the rest.

Careers are going to be destroyed, not only for the guilty - and rightly so - but also innocent riders will suffer the same if the nonsense is not stopped. A clear and concise set of guidelines have to be supplied.

I am an exponent of fair play for all and the thought of some young athlete being blamed in the wrong would be a travesty. I for two decades worked with young cyclists, and my only performance enhancer was hard work, and then some more of the same. Cycling is my life.

It does tend to bring the system under question...evidence, arguments, testimony and ‘decision’. It just seems bizarre and illogical, most assuredly the factual evidence versus the ‘political’ testimony.

Will there be a Tour of Missouri?

Due to a Tour of America being slated for the same time as the Tour of Missouri, will the Tour of Missouri still happen? The Tour of America revision has a stop in St. Louis.

I enjoyed the Tour of Missouri volunteering there this past September. It was great to see the Discovery Channel's farewell tour, and Slipstream's team too. I am looking forward to the domestic squad's in 2008, with the signing of Tyler with Rock Racing. America has come of age in cycling.

Roberto Heras

I cannot believe the arrogance of Roberto Heras in blaming everybody else for the predicament in which he now finds himself (First Edition Cyclingnews, December 30). When will proven drug cheats, such as himself, realise it is because of their lack of sporting integrity that the sport of cycling now finds it hard to attract sponsors, leading to so many riders - his colleagues - being without contract?

Like, I am sure, many fellow cycling fans, I am prepared to see reformed cyclists return from a drug ban to the professional peloton, but in my opinion, people with Heras' attitude and lack of sporting morals are best left out.

Best wishes to all for a healthy 2008.

Speaking about Lance

One would have to be exceedingly naive to believe that Lance Armstrong won his seven Tour de France titles on spring water and vitamins. Through the years just about all of his rivals have tested positive, yet he remained pure as the driven snow.

Many of his team-mates have been busted for dope, yet Armstrong has escaped detection. It doesn't mean he raced clean, it only means that he escaped detection.

Any time someone comes out with proof or even valid suspicion against Armstrong, that someone is silenced. F. Andreau was flicked from Toyota United, P. Steffen was flicked from TIAA-Cref. Both came out speaking against Armstrong, now people seem afraid of their job or perhaps their life to place suspicion on Armstrong.

Again, one would have to be naive to believe he raced clean.

Mayo's B Sample

The retesting of Mayo's B sample shows that once again the cycling authorities have shown that they are more damaging to the sport than any doper. First and foremost the riders, teams and the public have to have faith that the system works. When the governing body can't even follow it's own rules there is trouble.

This practice of testing the sample until they get the result they want abhorrent. The UCI makes itself more ridiculous all the time.
