The Commonwealth
Bank Cycle Classic returned
to Sydney today for two stages, both held in the Eastern Suburbs. The
first stage was a 100 kilometre circuit race in Centennial Park, a popular
course incorporating parts of the Olympic road course. The riders had
to complete 33 laps of a 2.86 kilometre circuit that contained a leg
sapping 500 metre climb each lap.
After yesterday's
"spreading" of the general classification courtesy of Bumble Hill, today
provided the perfect opportunity for non-sprinters and non-GC riders
to attack and stay away to win the stage. That occurred earlier than
most expected, with a group of 6 going away in the opening laps, never
to be caught.
Peugeot placed
two riders: Cameron Hughes and Cameron Jennings, and they were joined
by Steve Williams (Caravello), Henk Vaassen (NSW Sport & Rec), Anthony
Malarczyk (Dupont) and of course a Polish Mroz rider, Dariusz Skoczylas.
Their gap hovered at around 20 seconds for some laps before it gradually
increased, despite the efforts of Jans Koerts' Websdale team to close
it. By halfway, the lead to the main bunch was over two minutes, and
they did not look like getting caught.

Smaller groups continually
went off the front of the peloton to bridge the gap, but all were unsuccessful.
With 10 laps to go, a group finally managed to make some headway: Bjorn
Hoeben (Websdale), Pawel Niedzwiecki (Mroz), Peter Milostic (NSW Sport
& Rec), Glen Chadwick (Peugeot), Huw Pritchard (Dupont), and Yento Barker
(Dupont). They made big inroads into the lead, bringing it to 1:20 with
five laps to go.
Ultimately, they
were unsuccessful, finishing 25 seconds behind the leading six, and
48 seconds in front of the bunch. The win went to Skoczylas, who did
not have to do a great deal of work in the break as his team had the
race leader. However, second placed Steve Williams (who knows this course
very well) gave it his best shot to break the Polish stranglehold on
the race, leading out the uphill sprint with the Pole on his wheel.
In third was another Australian, Cameron Hughes, whose Peugeot team
had the strength of numbers in the break.
"I wasn't surprised
that the break went so early. It was good for us because I had an easy
ride and there was no pressure on us to chase," said Skoczylas, who
was the fourth member of the Polish team to win a stage this year.
The fifth member,
Bart Duraj (who lives in Australia) said that "now the pressure's on
me to win a stage." Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Skoczylas wouldn't
reveal the tactics, but the race is sure to be aggressive on the climbs
between Wollongong and Nowra.
Before that, there
is the "showpiece" of the Classic this evening, the 36 kilometre criterium
up and down Arden St., adjacent to Coogee Beach. The action starts at
6:35 pm and as always there will be a vocal crowd (especially in the
Coogee Bay Hotel) along to cheer the riders.
