With the pain of
Bumble Hill in their legs, the 58 rider peloton faced their second stage
of the day, another 30 kilometre criterium. The Central Coast seaside
town of Terrigal played host to a fast, free flowing race around the
0.9 kilometre circuit. Despite the best efforts of several riders, the
stage came down to a bunch sprint won by NSWIS Graeme Brown with teammate
Ashley Hutchinson in second place. Brown powered down the straight in
53x12 at 70 km/h to take his second stage victory in Terrigal in two
years.
The race was punctuated
by several sprint primes, with money generously put up by the locals
to add to the excitement. The first of these was taken by Jeremy Hunt
(QANTAS), who was prominent near the front along with his teammate Dan
Smith. The next three were taken by Cameron Hughes, Glen Chadwick (Peugeot)
and local favourite Phil Thuaux (NSW Sport & Rec).
Race leader Grzegorz
Wajs was in some difficulty early in the race, but came back strongly
to mark danger man Julian Winn who attacked in the closing stages of
the race. The bunch came together for the final lap, with Brown's teammate
Josh Collingwood driving it to keep it together.
The last 200 metres
were downhill, and Brown led out on the right hand barricade, with Hunt,
Jans Koerts, Dirk Schumann and Ashley Hutchinson close behind. At the
end, Brown and Hutchinson were simply too fast and the two track specialists
upstaged their road counterparts.

"I wanted second
wheel coming round the corner. I had Josh Collingwood in front of me
but he was on the front for long time so he was going to be a bit tired."
Jans Koerts was
definitely a danger, but Brown had his measure today, "I know this from
two years ago, I wanted to be in front of him as I was then. I'm definitely
happy with two out of two. I've been in the race now for five stages
and now I've had the opportunity."
The last couple
of days has not been all plain sailing for Brown, with a fine for both
him and Thorsten Wilhelms after some "unseemly behaviour" at the end
of stage 3. "That's just cycling. The ups and downs. There was no problem
for me. The incident...whatever happened, then it was over. I just race
hard and some people don't like that but that's how I am. I've been
fined many times in my life and I'm not changing for anyone."
He may not the
smoothest rider in the world but he's certainly quick. "I only had the
12 cog because I knew that one worked."
Tomorrow, he has
the chance again to shine in the Coogee criterium, an evening race held
on Sydney's famous beachfront. Before that, there is a 100 kilometre
circuit race in Centennial Park, using portions of the Olympic road
course.
