Dutchman Jans Koerts (Websdale) added a second stage victory to his palmares in this year's Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic, as he took out the 60 kilometre circuit race in Newcastle. He was his usual self, timing his run to perfection to beat German Dirk Schumann (Bosch) and Australian Ashley Hutchinson (NSWIS). With nine wins in this race in total, Koerts is the only rider who can threaten Max van Heeswijk's overall record of stage wins.

The circuit was slightly longer than last year's Newcastle criterium, 1.8 kilometres long with a tight turn at one end. Although the stage started under gray skies and a hint of rain, the weather cleared for another warm, humid day. There were plenty of spectators out to enjoy the action, as the usual flurry of attacks livened up the race quite quickly. The only non-starter was Brett Stapleton (Glen Parker), who had fractured his wrist after a fall yesterday.

Aggressive riders included the Poles, particularly Grzegorz Wajs, the British Dupont team (Matt Illingworth, Julian Winn) and Glen Parker Cycles-Fondriest(Jaarod Poad, Scott Suckling). No rider could get more than five seconds though, as the race was conducted at an extremely fast pace. Sprinters Jeremy Hunt, Jans Koerts and Graeme Brown were not in evidence near the front of the field until the end of the race.

With 10 laps to go, a threatening break managed to gain some leeway, containing Josh Collingwood (NSWIS), Julian Winn (DuPont), Stephan Gottschling (Bosch), Pawel Niedzwiekci (Mroz) and several others. However, they were too disorganised and it was Jans Koerts himself who did a lot of work to bring them back.

After that, a bunch sprint was inevitable as the peloton simply got faster and faster. NSW Institute were trying to put Ashley Hutchinson or Graeme Brown in a winning position, but Jans Koerts and Jeremy Hunt moved themselves up effortlessly into 5th and 6th wheel with one lap to go.

Bosch were also prominent and managed to put Dirk Schumann in a good spot as the field massed down Scott St for the final time. Jans Koerts however proved that yesterday's win was a true sign of his form as he powered down the right hand side to take the stage. Schumann, a former teammate of Koerts' was annoyed with himself for coming so close, while Ash Hutchinson rode well for third place. Hunt and Brown were just behind them, waiting for their chance when "Koerts starts to get tired," as Brown put it afterwards.

Koerts said afterwards that the short stages suited him. "I don't think it cost me too much power to bring back the breakaway - it was only 10 or 12 seconds. I was a bit worried because there were too many riders and I think Jeremy Hunt was up there and Graeme Brown. Of course I wasn't too concerned about the yellow jersey but I wanted to be up there for the sprint."

He commented again about his chances of holding the jersey after the stage to Bumble Hill on Tuesday (stage 6): "Normally, I'm not in the yellow jersey so I just won't try if I have no chance to win - why should I get 20th. But this year it's different with it finishing at the top so there won't be very many big time gaps."

Although he was won far less races this year than last (7 so far compared with 18), he said that "I think I rode bigger races this year - I did the Tour of Spain, many Classics and the World's was one of my last races. I haven't done anything for two weeks though, and I think it has helped me."

Third place went to a young Australian track rider, Ashley Hutchinson, who benefited from the work of Ben Brooks and Josh Collingwood in particular in the closing laps. A tall lad from Queensland, Hutchinson is using this race as a build up to next year's track season. He said he was happy with his podium finish, and hoped that either he or Brown could get up for a stage win at some point in the race.

The lakeside town of Warners Bay, on the outskirts of Newcastle, will host stage three later today, another 30 kilometre criterium. Can Koerts get three in a row?
