Every year for the past three years, he has said that he doesn't want to take the yellow jersey too early. Every year since 1998, Dutchman Jans Koerts has done just that by winning the first stage in Kempt Field, Sydney. The beefy sprinter riding for the Websdale team made it look ridiculously easy as he powered up the final hill and around the corner to lead Australian Graeme Brown home by several lengths. In third place was the irrepressible Brit, Jeremy Hunt, who will surely finish a few more times on the podium in this Cycle Classic.

The race was held under fairly typical Sydney weather for this time of year: humid, windy, and warm with the threat of rain. There was to be no gradual easing into the race, as Peugeot rider Baden Burke attacked from the gun. A former stage winner but more renowned for his sprinting, Burke stayed out in front for 5 laps of the 53 lap race before rejoining the pack.

From then on, the attacks were constant, keeping the pace very high throughout the race. Polish strongman, Grzegorz Wajs was doing more than his share of work up front, keeping things under control and getting in a few breaks from time to time. However, the fast circuit was not conducive to a successful break, although there was a notable effort from promising young Phillip Thuaux (NSW Sport & Rec) who combined with Glen Parker Cycles' Jaarod Poad for several laps. They managed a steady 9 second gap by just over halfway, before Jeremy Hunt, Jans Koerts and Dirk Schumann (Bosch) bridged up.

Koerts did so with ease, cruising on the handlebar tops as he caught them, but was content for the five man group to drop back to the bunch. Graeme Brown (NSW Institute) was also looking strong, and didn't want to let Koerts get too far away. However, with 17 to go it was essentially a complete field, apart from a few stragglers that had been caught in a crash.

With 10 laps to go, a group of four managed to steal away from the peloton: Steve Williams (Caravello), Edmund Hollands (Glen Parker), Grzegorz Wajs (Mroz) and Phil Thuaux. At that point there was a more serious fall in the peloton, with German Thorsten Wilhelms (BOSCH) seriously injuring his hand. The four held off the pack until just half a lap to go, as NSWIS led the chase for Graeme Brown, with Josh Collingwood and Ashley Hutchinson doing a lot of work.

In the end, this suited Koerts, who was sitting in about sixth wheel with a few hundred metres to go, before attacking up the hill to gap the rest. From there, it was a regulation win as he has done so often in this race.

Koerts, who has ridden the Classic eight or nine times and has an Australian wife, described the circuit as "A bit different [to races in Europe] - it's a short track. Three years in a row I say I don't want to win the yellow jersey on the first stage, but when I'm up there I want to go for it.

"With three or four laps to go, you have to use some power to stay up there, so I had to come back."

When asked about his chances of holding onto the jersey as the race goes into the hills, he replied, "I think you asked me this question three years in a row, and I think I will say the same thing - I will do what I can but probably lose it in the mountains."

Second placed Graeme Brown was desperate to take the win from Koerts, but he was the victim of the Dutch rider's huge horsepower. "After last year [when he didn't compete] I wanted to have a chance to take the yellow jersey. I didn't want Jans to get three in a row.

"I don't like losing either so when I came second it was a bit of a shame but good still. There's still 15 more stages to go, and there's a lot of crits and circuit races that should suit me down to the ground.

Third placed Jeremy Hunt was disappointed, but realistic. "I tried to catch them, and I blew halfway like usual, so I had to sit up and wait for the bunch sprint, which didn't go according to plan," he said.

Tomorrow is the first of many split stages, with a 60 kilometre circuit race in Newcastle's CBD at 11:30 am, followed by a 30 kilometre evening criterium in Warners Bay.
