Stage 1, Hurstville Criterium, 30 km

Saturday, November 4, 2000, 14:42 - 15:23

The Hurstville criterium is a great television spectacle and although the tough 552 metre circuit may be considered a little short in size for a major international tour, the course will allow the best rider to win.

Any doubts that the circuit was not ideal for criterium racing went out the window when Jan Ullrich, starting from the dead last position in 1993 in the Sanitarium Grand Prix Series in a world class field, took the lead with just half the race remaining and spreadeagled the field to win with a sensational ride.

The course was purposely built by Hurstville City Council is also outstanding for the spectators who get a wonderful view of the action no matter where they stand on the course. A major factor in the excitement with the race is the specially banked corners, which have been widened to ensure fast speeds.

Last year Jans Koerts made it a double defeating Franky Van Haesebroucke and Piotr Wadecki in treacherous wet conditions in which all cyclists stayed upright. Koerts had won the previous year while Jay Sweet has also been victorious on the circuit on several occasions.

Supporting the day will be a host of events put on by Hurstville Community Committee which will include the opening rounds of the now famous Singapore Trishaw Grand Prix, roller blade racing, athletic events, scooter races and supporting cycling action as well as first class entertainment.
