Brown redeems himself
in final sprint

NSW sprinter Graeme
Brown came from the depths of embarrassment to the heights of success
as he won the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic's last ever stage, a 36
kilometre criterium in Canberra. Brown overcame German Dirk Schumann
(Bosch) on the line to claim the win, at the same time netting the Giant
Sprint King jersey after a countback. In third place was Caravello's
Mark Renshaw who is also renowned for his track cycling skills.
The weather for
the final stage was significantly better, a blessing for the competitors
who certainly did not want to crash so close to home. An excellent crowd
turned out as well, lining the 1 km course virtually the whole way round.
In terms of the general classification, the only real possibility was
that Grzegorz Wajs could overtake Scott Suckling for second place. However,
the Australian was more than up to the task, marking Wajs every time
the Pole attacked.
There were attacks
during the race, but no-one gained more than 5 seconds. Matt Illingworth
and the Dupont team were particularly aggressive but Julian Winn was
not allowed any freedom. There was a promising attack by Bates Bikes'
Russel van Hout with three laps to go, and he held a slender advantage
as the bell rung for the final time on the Bank Classic.

and Koerts

The sprinters Graeme
Brown and Dirk Schumann were prominent near the front, but not the purple
clad Jans Koerts who dropped back as the field swarmed around the second
last bend. Obviously, Koerts didn't want to risk losing any more skin
(or worse) effectively conceding the points jersey.
The final sprint
was led out by Dirk Schumann a long way from home, and he looked to
have the power to hold off Brown. However, with 50 metres to go, Brown
found something extra and with a triumphant throw, pipped Schumann by
a quarter of a wheel. The win was an impressive comeback after team
manager Gary Sutton's comments yesterday, and Brown was of course happy.
"Yeah definitely.
It was the last time the race was on, the last stage and I wanted to
go out on a big note. I had a few problems on the last corner - I came
in about second wheel and I came out about fifth or sixth."
"I was really keen
to get the sprint jersey today, and because I won I think I sealed it.
Jans was watching me a lot.
Were you motivated
by anger after yesterday? "You can't really have anger over a stupid
thing on my part. I think I was a little but hard done by, but that's
the rules. I don't need anger to spur me on to win one of the biggest
bike races in Australia. Just the thrill of it is enough. I always wanted
to win the last stage."

For the Polish Mroz
team: Dariusz Wojciechowski, Grzegorz Wajs, Dariusz Skoczylas, Pawel
Niedzwiecki and Bart Duraj, the final Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic
was an outstanding success. They won the team's competition, placed
first, third and seventh in the individual general classification, won
five stages and placed in many others. In the end, it did not matter
which one of them won overall, but 32 year old Dariusz Wojciechowski
will certainly see his value in the team increase next year.
Finally for the
Bank Race, it is the end of an 19 year era. Race promoter Phill Bates
already has plans for a new and bigger event, but it is highly unlikely
next year. 2002 could see a revamped Cycle Classic with an as yet unknown
sponsor, but Phill Bates has already indicated that there is enough
sponsorship interest out there.
