Poland's Grzegorz
Wajs won the penultimate stage of the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic,
a 13 kilometre out and back time trial held on the normally fast Parkes
Way course. Unfortunately for the 49 riders left in the race, their
last day was miserable with cold rain falling throughout the morning.
Wajs, who led the
race until yesterday, was expected to ride fast and he averaged 49.68
km/h to beat KOM jersey holder Julian Winn by 31 seconds. Third place
went to Australian Peter Milostic (NSW Sport & Rec) who turned in a
good time to edge out Australian TT Champion, Darren Rolfe (NSWIS).
The battle for
first and second place on GC shifted slightly in Scott Suckling's favour,
who finished 7th in 16:29 but put 7 seconds into Dariusz Wojciechowski.
However, the latter should win the race after the final stage barring
accidents, as he still has 1:25 lead on the Australian. Suckling would
have to lap the field in the criterium to gain such an advantage, although
he will have to be wary of Wajs, who is now just 30 seconds behind him.
The last lap of
the 2000 Bank Classic is the 36 kilometre criterium held on a T-shaped
circuit. Apart from the previously mention second place on GC, there
is still the sprint king jersey which could be taken out by Graeme Brown,
Dirk Schumann or Jans Koerts.
