Meadowbank Track LeagueEdinburgh, 20 August 2002In the penultimate round of the Meadowbank National Track League, Marco Librizzi (City of Edinburgh RC) and Martin Lonie (Europcar RT) shared the honours. Commonwealth Games Team Sprint Bronze medallist Librizzi showed his turn of speed to win an exciting Keirin which decided the season long Morgan Trophy event. In the final, Graeme Steen (Glasgow Couriers) took a flyer as the derny pulled off and opened a few metres gap on the remainder of the field. Librizzi, confident of his speed left Steen dangling for over a lap until the final bend before running out a comfortable winner. Librizzi was also a comfortable winner of the Sprinters Ladder beating clubmate Stef Collins who the previous weekend won the latest round of the British Sprinters League. In the distance events Lonie continued his latest run of form winning the opening 15 lap scratch and coming second in the finale 5 mile event. Overall, there was no change at the top of the league with Evan Oliphant (Team Velo Ecosse) remaining 10 points ahead of Darren Howitt (Pro Acto Expressa) with Richard Chapman a further 6 points behind. With only one week remaining it looks as if Oliphant has the league won, although the tussle between Howitt and Chapman will go down to the last event. In the Women's League, Emily Forde (Team Caledonia) secured the retention of her title, picking up maximum points on the night. With Forde and nearest rival Kate Cullen both riding at the National Track Championships next week Forde has an unassailable lead with 51 points over Cullens 39. This points differential does not really reflect the closeness of the competition this year and in what was Cullens first year of competition, Forde will be hard pushed to retain her title in 2003. The closest competition is in the youth league where only 6 points separate the first three riders. Scottish Youth Sprint Champion Kevin Barclay (Edinburgh Racers) heads the league with 33 points with Thomas Mackay (Edinburgh Racers) on 30 points and Shane Charlton (Kingdom RT) on 27 points. The league will be decided on the final night next week in what is sure to be a hotly contested final few events.
