Day 1 - January 18

Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney

Aussies and Kiwis share the medals on day one

Australia and New Zealand shared the spoils at the first day of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival cycling programme in Bass Hill, Sydney. The crowd at the Dunc Gray Velodrome witnessed seven new best times at the AYOF in the afternoon session before comprehensive wins in the men's and women's individual pursuits.

Western Australia's Josephine Tomic won the first cycling gold medal after trailing until the sixth of eight laps to surge away from Huang Ting Ying (TPE) by 3.106sec in 2min 29.768sec to repeat her 2005 success in the women's 2km individual pursuit. "My plan was to take it out at a cruisey pace and then come home strong. I think I did that. She had quite a gap on me in the first couple of laps, I got a bit nervous," the 17-year-old said.

Lisa Friend (VIC) won a close bronze-medal ride off by 0.345sec against Lauren Ellis (NZL) to cover the two kilometres in 2min 35.193.

Earlier in qualification Tomic's best festival time, set in 2005, was broken three times with first Victorian Lisa Friend's slicing 0.343sec off to record 2min 33.196sec before Chinese Taipei's Huang Ting Ying smashed 3.175sec off Friend's time with 2min 30.021. Tomic knew what time to beat for she was in the last heat where her time, 2min 27.489 lowered the mark by 2.532sec. "I'm just really happy with the time, I am surprised by it, I haven't been feeling too good lately," Tomic said.

New Zealand's Jason Christie confirmed his favouritism in the men's 3km individual pursuit where he was too strong by 7.473sec in the gold medal final against Richard Lang (NSW) in 3min 26.983.

In qualification Lang broke the AYOF best time set by Christie's compatriot Daniel Shea in 2005 by the slim margin of 0.048sec in recording 3min 25.706 before Christie then took off a further 0.579sec with his time of 3min 25.127.

Lang set a new personal best by three seconds in qualification but could not repeat that effort in the gold medal ride-off. "The plan was to keep the same schedule, hopefully apply the same pressure. I didn't have the legs and I was beaten by a better man," the 17-year-old from Ashfield said.

Shane Archbold won the bronze medal to add to his fellow kiwi's Christie's gold in the men's individual pursuit when he edged Dale Scarfe (NSW) by 0.207sec, 3min 27.795 to 3min 28.102.

Olympic flame lighter Byron Davis (QLD) was the fastest qualifier for the men's flying 200m sprint and with Eddie Dawkins (NZL), Tomohiro Fukaya (JPN) and Jason Holloway (WA) will be the four semi-finalists on Friday.

Huang was the fastest qualifier in the women's flying sprint earlier in the day where the 17-year-old set a new best AYOF time when she covered the 200 metres in 12.340sec. Western Australia's Josephine Butler had earlier broken the best time, set by Olympic champion Anna Meares at the 2001 edition after crossing the line in 12.405sec. Butler and Huang will be joined in the women's semifinals by South Australia's Annette Edmondson and Malaysia's Mustafa Fatehah on Friday.

Friday's competition has six gold medals available - men's and women's sprint, women's 500m time trial, men's 1km time trial, along with the men's and women's scratch races. Competition starts at 1400 with the women's 500m time trial at the Dunc Gray Velodrome.
