Devonport Oval Carnival - December 10, 2006

In just his second season of racing in open company, Acacia Hills rider Daniel Jamieson broke through for his first major track win with victory in the Devonport Oval 3000 m Wheelrace at the weekend. Jamieson was Cycling Tasmania's Junior Rider-of-the-Season in 2004-05 but struggled in his first season in open age with just a third placing all summer to his credit. Ironically that third placing was in last year's Devonport Oval Wheel, when the race was over 2000 m.
Organisers lifted the distance of the event to 3000 m, effectively replacing the Devonport Trial Wheel and used it as a valuable hit out for upcoming Christmas carnivals. Younger brother of former junior world champion, Mark Jamieson, Daniel is a classy rider in his own right and could be the surprise packet of the 2006-07 summer carnivals. Riding off 240 m, Jamieson qualified for the final by finishing fourth in his heat and then timed his sprint to the line perfectly edging out veteran Jamie Perry and noted road rider Tim Walker.
The pre-race favourites, Kaiden Homan and Aaron Jones finished fifth and sixth respectively. Hobart's Jason Johnson continued his strong liking for the Devonport track with victory in the 1000 m Lightning Handicap, as well as a fourth in the wheelrace. Latrobe's Nathan Clarke made amends for missing the George Town A Grade Scratch race the week prior when he beat Tom Robinson and Stephen Rossendell at Devonport while Steve Martini won his first track race of the summer when he held Jamie Perry at bay in the B Grade Scrattch.
Amy Cure was the star of the show in women's racing, winning both the 2000 m wheel and 1000 m lightning handicap, while Harriet Kossman held off the fast finishing Laura McCaughey in the A Grade Scratch. At junior level, Jacob Fielding won all three Junior 2 races, Andrew Smith won both the scratch and lightning handicaps in Junior 1, but missed the wheelrace, which was won by Sam Brett and in Junior 3, William McDonagh collected the wheel and 1000 m double, while Nathan Hinkley won his third straight scratch race of the summer.
Rider of the season update
Jamie Perry may have missed victory at the Devonport Oval Carnival at the weekend, but two second placings has stretched his lead in the sixth annual Cycling Tasmania Rider-of-the-season award. Perry finished second in both the Devonport Oval 3000 m Wheelrace (behind Daniel Jamieson) and the B Grade Scratch (to Steve Martini) and took his overall points tally to 18, six ahead of John Rayner, who added to his balance with a third in the 1000 m Lightning Handicap, which was won by Hobart's Jason Johnson.
Whilst Perry leads comfortably in the Rider-of-the-Season award, Rayner heads the Order of Merit table for prizemoney won from the three track carnivals held to date. Jamieson's win in the wheelrace, which was effectively the Devonport Trial Wheel, jumped him into third place on the OOM.
In the women's section, Amy Cure displaced Laura McCaughey as the new leader after winning both the 2000 m wheelrace and 1000 m lightning handicap, whilst in the juniors, Nathan Hinkley had a win, a second and a third placing , but saw his overall lead narrowed to four points from Jacob Fielding, who dominated the Junior 2 age group by winning all three races on offer. McCaughey still leads the women's OOM, while Fielding is just $15 ahead of Hinkley in the junior OOM.
The next major event on the Tasmanian calendar will be 50th annual Rosebery
Carnival on December 23 on the eve of the widely acclaimed Tasmanian Christmas
Carnivals, which this year will include the following:

January 1 - Burnie
January 7 - Hobart
A criterium will also be held in Burnie on new Year's eve and post Christmas,
track carnivals will be held at Mersey Valley on January 14 and St Helens on
January 20. Racing in Tasmania this weekend will include the third and final
round of the Tasmanian Criterium Championships in Ulverstone.
