George in magic carpet ride super victory

SA road star David George got his Team Barlow World career off on a high note, by winning the Belgotex Classic in convincing style in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

George completed the 100km route in 2 hours 31 min 23 secs, followed home by Microsoft professional Johan van der Bergh and HSBC rider Ian McLeod.

For George, victory was made even sweeter by claiming the Hotspot and King of the Mountain honours during the race.

"It's great to win a race again, after having spent the past few months negotiating a way forward for my cycling career," said George afterwards.

"I certainly feel quite at home riding for the Barloworld team and believe that we will be a force on the local and international scene this year."

Daryll Impey was the talk of the town on Saturday, after taking the Belgotex Classic Hill Climb honours over 8,8km in 22 min 55 secs, with Van der Bergh next best.

Fresh from her second-place finish in the Kliprivier Suikerbosrand Classic on Saturday, Annette Loubser took the Belgotex Classic women's title in 3 hours 06 minutes 36 seconds, with Samantha Serfontein placing second.
