Horner starts title defence with a bang

Chris Horner soloed away from a charging field Thursday to claim victory in the first stage of the 2003 Solano Bicycle Classic.

Horner, a two-time GC winner of the stage race in years past, had been as much as four minutes behind a lagging 14-man breakaway, gratefully tucked in and away from pounding northern winds. Except for the 30 mph gusts, conditions were otherwise clear and comfortable, with temperatures in the low 70s.

Svein Tuft and Matt DeCanio of Prime Alliance had worked to create the breakaway once the men left windy Yolo County, but their presence alongside Saturn's trio of Viktor Rapinski, Mark McCormack and Will Frischkorn worked to neutralize any strong attacks. None of the single riders from other teams in the break save one took bold enough steps, and after 30 miles of rolling terrain and treacherous crosswinds, they were nearly caught at the base of the final hill.

"When we hit the climb, I had to wait and see what happened in the break, to see if Will had gone up the road solo," said Horner. "All day I had my whole team out there in the wind for me and I was just riding easy, and when you hit the final climb that makes all the difference. When I saw that the Jelly Belly rider looked like he got away, then I was free to go ahead and give it everything I had."

That Jelly-Belly rider was Australian Ben Brooks. The diminutive former Junior World Team Pursuit champion was instrumental in shaking up the middle parts of the race, attacking several times when the lead breakaway did not seem up to the task.

"I was just trying to keep the momentum. I was hoping we might have a minute and a half on the field at the bottom of the last climb. We were getting time checks all along and it kept coming down from four minutes, three, two," said Brooks. "The breakaway was pretty disorganized. There were attacks going, then they'd sit up. With a couple of teams chasing, the time came down pretty quick."

With just 30 seconds on a field of over 170 being led by Ofoto-Lombardi and 7Up-Maxxis, Brooks needed all the momentum he could muster. Prime Alliance's Jonathan Vaughters followed Horner's move and rode hard on the Aussie's heels.

"Chris Horner and I went up the climb together and then Chris went up the climb faster. I guess Brooks got caught in the middle," said Vaughters.

Women hang together till Bruckner slices through

The women's stage stayed remarkably intact and followed the men's route without the windy drama of the first 35 miles. T-Mobile's Kim Bruckner began to outpedal Lyne Bessett and Manon Jutras of Saturn at the base of the final climb.

"It wasn't a very exciting race until the very end," said Bruckner. 'We thought it was going to break up on the first climb, because it was so long, but it wasn't that bad. The pace wasn't super fast and so it came to the base of this (final) climb together."

Anne Samplonius of TDS and Meredith Miller of Grace had at one point almost 90 seconds on the field, but the combined efforts of Saturn and T-Mobile at the front of the pack were sufficient to bring them in just prior to the climb. Bruckner edged forward and began slicing through her competitors, eventually passing stragglers from the men's group and motoring up the tarmac.

"I just put it down and that was my opportunity to see if I could drop people," she said. "Saturn had two really strong girls, and this race is full of surprises, because there's so many girls here."

Tomorrow brings Stage 2 of the Solano Bicycle Classic, a 7-mile climb up to the top of Garbage Hill. This replaces the flat time trial of last year's race and should favor Horner and Bruckner once again.

Saturn team report

By Giana Roberge, Team Saturn

The Solano Bicycle Classic kicked off today outside of Fairfield, CA with a hilly, blustery road race around Lake Berryessa. The 54 mile women's race and 87 mile men's race both finished with an ascent up Howell Mountain Road into the cute little town of Angwin. As if the hills around Lake Berryessa did not offer enough of a challenge, the race saw a strong head and three-quarter headwind for the majority of the race.

The men's race saw a break form off the front of the echelons created by strong cross winds. A quick evaluation by all teams judged the break to represent everyone well, and the time gap quickly grew until it reached the five minute mark. Saturn had three riders with Will Frischkorn, Mark McCormack and Victor Rapinski. Prime Alliance had two with Svein Tuft and Matt DeCanio, Jelly Belly had Ben Brooks, and Health Net had two riders as well.

It looked as if the break would stay clear, but the only two teams not well represented, 7-UP and Ofoto, invested in bringing the break back, managed to contain it to a 30 second gap by the bottom of the climb. Not knowing if how his Saturn teammate was performing in the break, Horner patiently waited until he saw where Frischkorn was on the climb, pacing himself until he had a clear view. Along side were his two teammates, Tim Johnson and Eric Wohlberg. Prime Alliance's Jonathon Vaughters was also there, having clearly marked Horner as the man to beat.

Half way up the climb, Horner could see the Brooks had moved ahead of Frischkorn and launched his attack. Vaughters tried to respond, but Horner danced his way to the top, finishing solo for the win, the Gold Leader's Jersey and the time bonus seconds. Brooks finished second ahead of Vaughters, who was well over one minute back on Horner. Wohlberg and Johnson finished in the top ten as well (results unofficial at time of report), with Frischkorn collecting enough points along the way to grab the lead of the climber's competition. The Saturn Team also leads the Team Classification.

The women's race followed an abbreviated version of the men's race, but still featured the cross and head wind sections and the final gut wrenching climb. The field remained together until Anne Samplonius (TDS) and Meredith Miller escaped the field for about ten miles with their largest time gap at 1:16. A group effort from Saturn, T-Mobile and Victory Brewing brought the two-some back to the fold. From there, the peloton remained compact until the base of the climb when it shattered immediately. Setting the pace were Saturn teammates Lyne Bessette and Manon Jutras, marked by T-Mobile's Kimberly Bruckner. Clearly in great climbing form, Bruckner pushed the pace, shedding the Saturn duo. Once they crested the mountain, the two worked together to close the 45 second gap, but Bruckner was not to be caught, soloing in for the win and the lead of the overall. Bessette finished second with Jutras in third. Sue Palmer Komar finished in fourth. Like their male teammates, the Saturn women lead the Team Classification.

Tomorrow features a new event with a mass start hill climb with a three mile flat run into 4.7 miles of climbing. The 7.7 mile event should suit both Horner and Bruckner with pitches at 22% and an average gradient of 15% for the 4.7 miles of fierce climbing.
