The 2007 World Cup isn't yet finally determined, but it remains a close battle after British racer Nicole Cooke came second in Plouay, France, behind Italian Noemi Cantele. The latter scored a second win in Brittany while her compatriot Marta Bastianelli proved herself to as an up and coming aggressive member of the women's peloton.

Nothing happened in the first 50 kilometers of racing until a first attack was launched by Frenchwoman and long-time racer Jeannie Longo, but the senior racer, whose ultimate goal is to ride Beijing Olympics age 50, didn't last long in the front.

It wasn't until the second half of the race that the speed went above 34km/h. About that time, defending champion Nicole Brändli withdrew due to a mechanical problem.

In the second last lap 19.1km lap, Kori Seehafer from the US National Team initiated the first of a number of attacks. Marta Bastianelli's was the most convincing of them. The 20 year-old Italian from Rome went solo with 35km to go. "Maybe I shouldn't have done that because I was lacking the necessary energy for racing for the win at the end?" she contemplated afterward.

T-Mobile's Chantal Beltman bridged the gap as the magenta-clad team became concerned about the front of the race. Judith Arndt accelerated strongly at the bell lap.

In the côte de Lézot (the first of the three climbs on the course), a quartet took off, formed by Noemi Cantele (Bigla), Nicole Cooke (Raleigh), Oenone Wood (T-Mobile) and Bastianelli, who was wearing the colors of the Italian national team that she'll also wear for the first time at the senior worlds in Stuttgart this year. Bastianelli is no stranger to international events; she finished second as a junior in Verona at the world championships. This year, she also finished second to Marianne Vos at the European championships.

Despite an acceleration by Longo in the chasing group, no one made it across the gap to the four women off the front. Cantele attacked on the last climb. "I tried three times," she said. "I knew I had to finish alone in order to win. Two years ago, there were two of us sprinting for the win when I won for the first time here, but I said to myself, 'I have to get rid of them in the climb.' I gave all my energy. When I heard that I was 25 seconds away, I understood the win was mine. It allowed me to enjoy the win much more than two years ago. Alone is definitely the best way to win a race."

Cooke won the sprint for second place and scored 50 more points for the World Cup. She now has a comfortable lead of 80 points over Vos. Because the scale of the points is doubled for the final event in Nürnberg, Germany, on September 9, 150 points will be awarded to the winner, so it'll come down to a duel between Cooke and Vos.

"It's not over yet," Cooke said. "But I'm very happy with my result today. I'm in a good position before the final race."

Most of the top cyclists now turn their attention to the World Championship. With five wins this year, Cantele can be confident in her chances. "I missed the podium by finishing fourth before. I have to make it now, " she said. "I won't race in the next ten days. I'll only train, then I'll ride the world cup in Germany, then the Tour of Tuscany and the world championships." T he favorites will also be watching for rising star Bastianelli in Stuttgart.
