Friday 23 January
This follows the tried-and-true route of previous years up the South
Eastern Freeway, from King William Road, Unley to the Stirling exit, through
the lush cool hills towns of Aldgate and Mylor before riders vie for the
days first SA Lotteries sprint points at Echunga.
Echunga will be alive with action with the National Womens Criterium
Series competing in town that morning. Riders head to Mt Barker over the
freeway to Littlehampton and then via Mt Barker Rd to Hahndorf.
Here, the race winds through familiar towns, changing direction for three
passes under the finish arch in Hahndorf one towards Adelaide and
two towards Nairne. One of the Adelaide Hills much-loved heritage
towns, Hahndorf is a perfect spot to while away the hours between the
rushes of racing.
From Hahndorf to Lobethal it takes Cudlee Creek Rd as far as Fox Creek
Rd (being used for the first time by this event) as it heads to a brand
new Laubman & Pank King of the Mountain at Croft Rd.
Cyclists will be on familiar ground when they refuel at the Swamp Rd
feed station on the way to Woodside, then head via Vickers and Tiers Roads
onto Onkaparinga Valley Rd then back via Oakbank, past the Balhannah Hotel
(for SA Lotteries Sprint #2) to Hahndorf.
After passing through the finish arch on the way to Littlehampton and
Nairne, the race loops again to pass along Woodside Rd to Inverbrackie
then Woodside, Oakbank, Balhannah and Verdun. Riders will have last years
photo finish in mind as they race down the straight for the final pass
under the arch for the big Hahndorf finish.
