Stage 4 - February 3: Gerik - Tanah Merah, 172.9 km

A hat-trick for the Brazilian

Tina Turner's hit song, "You're Simply the Best", rang out over the loudspeaker in downtown Tanah Merah as Brazilian Luciano Pagliarini representing Lampre was introduced to an estimated 5,000 plus crowd after producing yet another epic sprint to claim his third successive stage win on stage four of the Le Tour de Langkawi.

It sent media personal checking records as to when a similar achievement had taken place. It has happened before, but not in succession: Robert Hunter did it last year and Jay Sweet repeated Hunter's effort in 1996.

In true sprinting style, Pagliarini's team got him to within 500 metres of the finish before moving swiftly forward in the finishing straight as the 24 year old put on the finishing touches. Metres from the line, he threw his arms to the heavens in anticipation of victory, but Graeme Brown (Panaria-Fiordo) kept to his task and literally failed by the narrowest of margins, allowing the Brazilian to create a piece of LTdL history.

"I was planning to have a quiet time today, especially since I'm not a climber and there were two mountains to tackle early on, but I was fine over the passes and as we neared the finish my teammates urged me to get up there for the sprint," said Pagliarini, adding, "their motivation was tremendous and they kept shouting at me 'Go Paglia, go', so I went for it!

"They carried me through to 500 metres to go and from then on I gave it everything," said the jubilant triple winner.

The race lead continues to stay in the capable hands of Nathan O'Neill (Saturn) for the fourth day in succession.

How it unfolded

Today's stage from Gerik to Tanah Merah had all the ingredients to force a change in the overall standings: difficult terrain, two category one climbs and for good measure, three intermediate sprints to keep the tempo up.

In the opening stages, there were a number of attacks that soon came to nothing, but it was at the first KOM of the day that a pattern emerged with the reigning world mountainbike cross-country champion, Canadian Roland Green, showing his prowess as a climber and clawing back three seconds on O'Neill.

Green was soon aided by his teammate Peter Wedge, making the junction in a small break two kilometres from the summit. However, Green, 2001-02 World MTB Champion, took the prime with ease, including the first sprint at Banding (38.7 kilometres).

Thanks in the efforts of the Saturn, there was eventually a regrouping of the after 52km of racing. But Green was far from finished and took off again after 62 kilometres, with Ruber Alveiro Marin (Colombia-Selle Italia) and Seamus McGrath (Canada) quickly joining him. The pace was too brisk for McGrath, however, slipping back to the peloton and leaving Marin and Green to go ahead with Green again taking out the KOM at Titiwangsa.

At 81km, Marin began to experience mechanical trouble, which left Green out in front with Johan Dekkers (Ville De Charleroi), Fernandez German Nieto (Colchon Relax-Fuenlabrada) and Kazuya Okazki (Japan), the latter three coming across to the pair of Green and Marin shortly after the KOM.

Marin eventually rejoined lead group, but with the pace from the peloton increasing and the time gap narrowing, Nieto and Dekkers forged ahead, and were then joined by Eric Leblacher (Credit Agricole) and Satoshi Hirose (Japan) after 112 kilometres.

As has been the practice over the last three stages, the lead group enjoyed a moment of fame before a swift reaction from the peloton closed the gap in the final kilometres, and so with five kilometres of racing left to the finish, the entire field which started the day minus a couple of retirements came together for the final sprint, won for the third time in as many days by Luciano Pagliariani (Lampre), ahead of Graeme Brown (Panaria-Fiordo) and Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole).

The Panaria rider was furious at missing out yet again: "As we slowed down after the finish, he made a motion as if to lean on me and make me swerve. It’s the same thing he did the previous two days," said the peeved Aussie.

"What's up?" responded Pagliarini. "He protested when I beat him on the first day, had another moan yesterday and again accused me of switching him today.

"I went up to him to make the peace and shake hands but he wouldn't. He acted like a sore loser and that's not good. In this sport you have to be able to accept being beaten, however good you think you are. When you win, you win and when you lose you just have to accept it with good grace," said Pagliarini.

"I told him we are professionals, not babies, and we should respect each other. It's not good to have vendettas in the bunch. That's dangerous and leads to crashes. We are all in this to earn a living and if you fall it can put you out of action for months," he added.

Talking later, Brown saw it very differently: "He's ruthless in the sprints and he came up aggressively after the finish and I thought he wanted to start a fight. Then our bikes somehow got tangled up and by the time we straightened them out the whole thing blew over."

A bit of push and shove, tangled bikes - all in a sprinter's day

Additional reporting by Gennie Sheer

Sydney’s Graeme Brown almost came to blows with Luciano Pagliarini after the Brazilian scored his hat trick in stage four of the Tour de Langkawi.

The pair of rival sprinters hit the line locked together and officials called for the finish line photo before confirming Pagliarini’s third win in as many days. But the pair seemed more interested in settling a score.

Brown was second on stage two and protested the Brazilian had blocked his run at the line. On stage three Brown was third but had no complaints about Pagliarini. However, today the battle between them heated up.

“I’m just a bit sick of him and he said he was a bit peeved but what am I supposed to do,” said Brown reacting to reports that Pagliarini had labelled him childish for swerving in front of him after the line. “I couldn’t keep going straight because of the photographers and cameras past the line.”

“I didn’t do anything to try and make him crash,” explained Brown. “Does he want me to just run them (the photographers) down?” After the line the pair had a heated discussion. “He said ‘let’s fight’ or something like that and I said ‘let’s do it now’ but then when we got off our bikes my pedal tangled in his front wheel and we sort of got involved in getting the bikes apart so nothing happened,” said Brown of the stoush that failed to eventuate. “It’s all sprinting and he ain’t winning tomorrow I can guarantee that.”

“The green (Pagliarini) squeezed me out in the last 200 metres as I was coming into a space that suddenly wasn’t there and I had to go around and try it again,” said Brown, but Credit Agricole's Stuart O’Grady third on the stage, believes Pagliarini was a worthy winner.

“I was pretty close to the action and Pagliarini was in front all the way,” said O’Grady. “Brown is a bit dark he’s three nil down so he got heated and agitated after the finish.”

But the near win has only spurred Brown on to try something new again tomorrow, although his prediction of him winning might hinge on whether he has recovered from a bad bout of gastric which has been making his life uncomfortable. “I’ve lost five litres of fluid, four kilos in weight and haven’t been able to eat much for the past two days,” said Brown. “Hopefully this will pass and I can come out full guns blazing tomorrow because I know I’ve got the speed it’s just a case of using it.”

Meantime O’Grady has signalled his sprint form is returning. “The last couple of days I’ve been avoiding the carnage at the front because it’s been a little bit too dangerous to play,” said O’Grady who like others in the peloton has used caution since the pile up of two thirds of the field within the final kilometre of stage two. “I was hoping they (some of the less experienced riders) would tire out a little and the pace would be quicker at the finish which is what happened today.”

“I set myself up a bit better and started feeling a lot better than on previous stages so I got to have a decent crack at it (the sprint),” he said. “It wasn’t bad, not perfect but on the whole I was happy.”

O’Grady also coped well with the first real climbing of his Tour de Langkawi debut. “It was a difficult climb (the second of the day) but it played in my favour with Colombians and Italians attacking so hard they blew themselves up. I just set a good tempo and got out of it with the least amount of pain possible but it was a very difficult first taste of Malysian climbing,” he said.

“Genting won’t be good,” predicted O’Grady of the infamous stage nine climb on Saturday when the field will finish the 143 kilometre stage from Seremban with a 45 kilometre haul into the Genting Highlands north of Kuala Lumpur. The final ten kilometres are tough but the final two gut wrenching kilometres have, in past years, split the race wide open.

But before Genting the sprinters will again come out to play as the next three stages will be raced over relatively flat roads. This provides a perfect template for Saturn to defend the overall race lead of Nathan O’Neill. “Today on the climb we did well to defend everything with Chris Horner, Tom Danielson and myself all pretty active covering moves,” said O’Neill. “The other three (Saturn team mates) were riding tempo before and after the climbs and did a superb job again.”

O’Neill, a four time Australian time trial champion, crossed the line today in 56th place but only after avoiding yet more finish line chaos. “It’s scary because there was a crash just in front of me but I was back far enough to see it happen and had enough time to grab a handful of brakes and stop,” explained O’Neill who is enjoying being the leader but admits it is tiring.

“You’re nervous and it’s emotionally draining more than physically tiring but I’m just trying to stay as relaxed as possible and take it as it comes,” he said. “Anything could happen in this race so I aim to make the most of every day in yellow.”

Earlier in the race Flanders iteamNova rider Ronny Assez was thrown off the race for holding onto the second team car up the second climb. Officials initially issued a penalty which also eliminated team manager Franky Van Haesebroucke but he successfully argued that he was no where near the incident and should not be disqualified. “If one media person does something wrong you don’t send them all home,” argued Van Haesebroucke. “I had nothing to do with it and I wasn’t driving the second car.

Everything's (still) sweet as Corey fails

Also out of the race is South Australian Corey Sweet who abandoned at the 120 kilometre mark of today’s stage. “I’ve been flat for the last few weeks because of a chemical imbalance in my body,” said Sweet, who was this year signed to O’Grady’s Credit Agricole team (Sweet also abandoned the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under last month). “It’s just a matter trying not to do anything too intense but then I had to start this race.” “I won’t race for a few weeks now and it should be fine,” he said. “The team knows about it and they’re okay with it.” Sweet will fly to Cologne in Germany as soon as possible to collect his belongings and relocate to Toulouse near O’Grady before resuming racing in Europe.
