Australian Youth Olympic FestivalSydney, Australia, January 9-12, 2003Day 1 - January 9Australians claim first gold but Japanese book a clean sweep in men's sprintAustralians tonight claimed the first two cycling gold medals contested at the Dunc Gray Velodrome with Tasmanian, Stephanie Williams, 17, and NSW rider, Andrew Wyper, 17, winning the individual pursuit events. Williams, from Scottsdale in north east Tasmania, had been the fastest qualifier and favourite for the gold in the 2km women's event but had to work hard to answer the early pace set by her gold medal rival, Jessie MacLean, 17, (ACT). "Jessie went out really hard at the start while I stuck to the schedule my coach and I had set," said Williams, who last year represented Australia in the junior road race at the World Titles in Belgium. "I didn't panic but rode my plan and increased the pace when I needed to." Her plan worked and the teenager crossed the finish line in 2:36.579 safely clear of MacLean who posted a time of 2:37.209 for silver. The ride off for third place was won by South Australian, Renee Braithwaite, who claimed the bronze medal in 2:42.267. Williams is following the path of her elder sister Emily who is forging a career in road cycling. "I really enjoy the competition and want to try to make the Australian team again this year," said Williams who will also line up in tomorrow's scratch race heats along with the points race on Saturday and the criterium on Sunday. Inverell born Andrew Wyper, 17, moved to Sydney six months ago to pursue his aims of a career in cycling and tonight contested the 3km individual pursuit for the first time. The result was a gold medal for Wyper, a former triathlete. "In triathlon I got a few placings' at nationals in the U/14 triathlon competition but I really liked the cycling side of it so I decided to concentrate on that," said Wyper, whose parents Alex and Cathy and younger brother Cameron drove down from Inverell to watch him compete. Wyper will also line up in the scratch, points and criterium events over the next three days. Wyper completed the 3km in 3:36.147 with Tasmanian David Klyne claiming silver in 3:39.464. Queenslander Miles Olman won the bronze medal ride off in a time of 3:38.079. In the sprint competition Australian U/19 sprint silver medallist, Lucy Stewart, 17, (ACT), posted a time of 12.624 in the 200m qualifying round to claim top seeding. Japan's Masumi Shinozaki rode 12.958 while NSW South Coast cyclist, Rebecca Borgo, 17, the reigning Australian U/19 sprint champion, who was fifth in the sprint at last year's junior world titles in Melbourne, claimed third seed in 13.052. All three have won through to tomorrow's semi finals with Stewart set to face Tasmanian Kirby Piscioneri, 17, who qualified fifth fastest, and Shinozaki against Borgo in the best of three round to decide the medal finalists. Stewart is a veteran of the AYOF having raced in the 2001 event. Since then she gained selection in the Australian team for the Junior World Titles raced in Melbourne last year. She placed fourth in the keirin at the Championships and seventh in the sprint.
"I was actually hoping for a personal best in qualifying but the minute I got on the track I realised the conditions weren't right for a fast time," said Stewart whose PB is 12.412 which she rode in Melbourne. She has also followed a sibling into the sport. Her brother Kial, 19, was a dual national champion in 2001 in the U/19 ranks and is now competing as a sprinter at national senior level. In the men's sprint Australia might have secured three of the top four seedings in qualifying but in the quarter finals the Japanese dominated to shut out the Australian attack and guarantee a clean sweep of the medals. Dubbo's Andrew Taylor, 17, had set the time to beat of 11.287 in qualifying with Japan's Tsubasa Kitatsura was close behind in 11.365. The youngster of the Australian team, Victorian Shane Perkins, who celebrated his 16th birthday ten days ago, rounded out the top three qualifiers covering the 200m in 11.446. Queenlander Clint Johnson was fourth seed in 11.474. The Japanese employed superior tactics in the best of three heats in the quarter finals. Eighth seed Yuichi Matsuda, caught Taylor napping in the first match up and in the second Taylor couldn't find the speed to get around his Japanese rival. Kitatsura won the first heat against Johnson and was awarded a walk-over for the second when Johnson missed his start time. Perkins and Shugo Hayasaka (seeded sixth) were one-all before Hayasaka claimed the decider and Yudai Nitta beat his team mate Kazumichi Sugata in straight heats. The semi finals will see Matsuda race against Nitta and Hayasaka against Kitatsura. The women's 500m time trial final will kick off tomorrow afternoon's session at 1.00pm followed by the men's one kilometre time trial final. There will also be heats of the men's and women's scratch races with the medal finals for these and the sprint competition scheduled in the 6.00pm night session.
