Illawarra Cycle Club
Barbara Wyles Handicap, July 3, 2004
Mathiske Powers To Victory
Guy Mathiske won the 45 km Barbara Wyles Handicap for 2004 by breaking away from his group with half a lap remaining of the 9km course. The 2002 event winner, Frank Tortorici, continued his run of good form by sprinting to second place with Gavin Drury finishing third.
The Barbara Wyles Handicap was initiated by one of the Illawarra Cycle Club's favourite and most successful riders, Eric Doughty, in recognition of the work done by Barbara Wyles for the club.
Forty-one starters lined up for the race but only twenty-six were to finish in breezy but relatively good conditions.
Colin Shaw and Brian Nobbs led the field away from a limit mark of fourteen minutes. The two were caught at the end of the second lap by the twelve minute group who were combining well with strong work from Paul Kaye, Teegan Makowski and the improving David Hull.
The strong nine minute group of Tony Burke, Jason Johnson, Daniel Daly and David McMaster combined well to catch the ten minute group early in the race and then powered on to catch the front two groups at the start of the third lap. It seemed this group may have the reserves to stay away from the block and scratch bunches, but as often happens when large bunches form, disorganization prevented efficient progress.
The very strong block bunch was determined to stay away from the seven man scratch bunch. Mark Davis drove the bunch hard with Guy Mathiske and Craig Paull taking strong turns.
After catching the five and seven minute bunch the new combined group easily caught the combined limit bunches near the end of the fourth lap and formed a large leading bunch. It seemed that the scratch bunch would now catch the only other group on the road.
However it seemed as though the scratch riders were preoccupied with the prize for fastest time rather than trying to reel in the other bunches and take the major trophy.
Guy Mathiske attacked from the combined block bunch on the last ascent of the only hill on the course. Clearly one of the strongest in the group, Mathiske was allowed to gain a small break and the lack of an organized chase allowed him to time trial to the finish. A tiring Mathiske crossed the line with nine seconds to spare.
Mark Davis looked likely to take the bunch sprint for 2nd place but was outsprinted by the fast finishing Frank Tortorici, Gavin Drury and Dean Marcinkowski.
Peter Jones outsprinted fellow scratch riders Tim Morris and Craig Williams for fastest time, finishing only fortysix seconds behind the block bunch.
