Hamilton takes Mount Washington again

Tyler Hamilton is still in world-class shape. Considering that for the past two years the 2004 Olympic time trial gold medalist and former Phonak team leader has been suspended from sanctioned competition because he failed a blood doping test, he's doing well - well enough, at least, to win the Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb in New Hampshire on August 19, for the fourth time in as many attempts.
The Hillclimb, a 7.6-mile all-uphill contest on the famous old Auto Road that scales the highest peak in the Northeastern U.S., is very emphatically a non-sanctioned event. Operating independently of the UCI and any other governing body, it is the main fundraiser for a local non-profit conservation center. Now in its 34th year, it offers a rare opportunity for pros, category-ranked amateurs, extreme sports adventurers and all-'round fitness types to compete together in one event.
The controversial competitor
In 1997, the race attained a new level of visibility when Hamilton, who had gone to prep school at New Hampshire's Holderness Academy and was now a rising star in cycling, blasted up the Auto Road in 51:56, nearly six minutes faster than anyone else had ever done it. In 1999 he returned and lowered his record to 50:21.
When hit with the UCI suspension, Hamilton returned to Mt. Washington as practically the only serious race that was open to him, winning it in 2005 and again this year, each time by dropping the pack immediately and battling only the 12 percent grade and damp weather to reach the 6288-foot summit in 52:21. "I treated it like a time trial," said Hamilton. "It's a short effort. I wanted to go as hard as I could from the bottom to the top."
In better atmospheric conditions, the former Tour de France stage winner, who has called Mt. Washington tougher than the Alpe d'Huez, might have retaken the current course record, set in 2002 by Tom Danielson at 49:24. This year's weather, however, included a sudden rainsquall at the start, wet fog on the upper slopes, and a 20-mph. wind - mild by local standards but enough to be a nuisance.
"It was hard to get traction," said Hamilton. "In weather like this, when you stand up your back wheel will slide. For a record you need perfect weather. But that's Mount Washington for you."
One reason the Hillclimb was like a time trial for Hamilton is that few other pros are prepared to race against him here. For one thing, the strongest are mostly in Europe now. (Danielson, who also won Mt. Washington in 2003, is riding the Vuelta d'Espagne.) For another, younger rising stars reportedly are hesitant to appear at the same event with Hamilton. Justin England, the 2004 Mt. Washington winner, had planned to compete at Mt. Washington again this year but withdrew, acknowledging that he had received some warning about possible suspension or other punishment if he were to compete in a race with a cyclist currently under suspension.
The Master returns

One who had no such problem was Ned Overend, the cycling legend from Durango, Colorado. Overend, the former world mountain bike champion who rode Mt. Washington for the first time in 2005, on his 50th birthday, and finished fourth came back this year to improve on his first performance.
At the starting cannon, Overend sprinted ahead of even Hamilton, then was overtaken by half a dozen riders, and promptly picked off all of them except Hamilton himself. Riding alone between Hamilton and everyone else, he lowered his time to 54:41, the fastest ever by a rider over the age of 40.
"I was trying to keep Tyler in sight," said Overend. "I had to make my own pace based on the gearing I chose." Overend estimated he spent half the climb in his lowest gear, a 36-29 spread in which he could stay seated but had to pedal at a higher cadence than he wanted.
Foggy on the top
Third was an ebullient Ian Ayers, a second-year pro from Atlantic Highlands, N.J., in his fifth and best appearance here. Trailing Joseph Moody of Watertown, Mass., for the first half, Ayers, 24, passed Moody just above tree line (four miles) and reached the 6288-foot summit in 58:33, leaving Moody fourth in 59:47.
At the fog-shrouded summit Ayers was greeted by his father and his grandfather, both of whom have ridden this race in years past. "I rode the Tour of Utah two weeks ago," he said. "Six days at high altitude. It made a difference."
On the women's side, Aimee Vasse, 28, drew on experience to fight off two 43-year-old rivals and win the race for the third year in a row. Vasse, a cycling gypsy who grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and graduated from Williams College, spent the summer training at her parents' home in New London, N.H. She finished in 1:08:31, placing 22nd overall among 570 finishers.
Riding the most tactical race of her three here, she trailed Marti Shea of Marblehead, Mass., and Sue Schlatter of Ottawa, Ontario in the early miles below the mountain's treeline, but as Vasse said afterward, "I knew I had to save something for the end. The key was the win, not the time."
At the start Shea quickly took the lead, but, said Vasse, "I know that's her style. The pace was still a little slow, so I could still be conservative and pass her later."
"I tried to blow the pack apart and create a gap for myself," said Shea. "I got the gap, but I probably should have gone out slower." Shea led until the fourth mile, when Vasse and Schlatter both passed her.

Schlatter remained a problem for Vasse. "She got behind in a group of us," said Vasse, "and I was taking the wind at that point, so I dropped back to let her move up for a bit."
Schlatter held on until just before final 70-yard climb to the finish line, but Vasse was ready. "I know this final climb like the back of my hand," she said with a smile. "It was my first sprint finish here," she added, gesturing quotation marks around "sprint," since the final climb is a ridiculously steep 22 percent grade, where several riders each year tumble off their bikes in the effort of trying to pedal forward.
Schlatter arrived six seconds behind, in 1:08:37. Shea was third at 1:11:40, with local rider Joanna Peters of North Conway, N.H. fourth in 1:16:32. "I'm not really a cyclist," said Shea. "I'm a middle-aged woman who likes doing a few hills!"
Conquering heroes
Shea, who grew up in Manchester, N.H., and now lives in Hamilton's hometown of Marblehead, Mass., was a runner at Boston University, where her coach was none other than 1984 Olympic marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson. Lately she has turned to cycling - with some ironic comments about how she was put off by what she saw as rampant drug-use among distance runners.
"Since I never competed (in cycling) as a young person," said Shea, "I can't beat myself up when I look at my times, because I have nothing to compare them to."
On the other hand, speaking of young persons, 16-year-old Paul Runyon, Jr., of Philadelphia, finished seventh overall in 1:01:49. Runyon is coached by Rick Crawford, who also coaches Tom Danielson.
And speaking of drugs, Hamilton, who has constantly maintained that the tests he failed were bogus, talked matter-of-factly after the race about his suspension and his hopes for a spot on the U.S. team in the World Championships next month. Asked about the stigma from the suspension, he said, "There should be no stigma at that point, since I won't be banned. It should come down to my fitness level. I believe I should be selected for the team."
He acknowledged that the past two years have been terrible for him. "It cost me a lot, in money and in time fighting the suspension. But I'm at a point where I'm trying to put this behind me." In fact, he said, he has spent over $700,000 on legal fees and has had to sell his house in Marblehead and one of his houses in Colorado in order to cover the costs.
He added that being smart financially has helped him get through two years of earning nothing, and that his involvement with fundraising events for his foundation, which supports multiple sclerosis research, has been a good distraction. "Doing fundraising rides has been fun."
As to the test that allegedly showed the presence of someone else's blood in his veins, Hamilton repeated his assertion that such tests were flawed. "That test is 100 percent not ready. From the fall of 2004, after I took it, until 2006, they actually withdrew that test from use," he said, referring to the UCI and WADA. "But they won't admit that, and they might even deny it."
He expressed particular empathy for Floyd Landis and doubts about the testosterone test that may have cost Landis the Tour de France title. "I believe Floyd," said Hamilton. "I know him well. We're friends. I brought him to Phonak, and we would have been teammates in '05 if I had been allowed to ride."
Standing at a window of the fog-shrouded Mt. Washington Summit House, he added, with clear-eyed resignation, "He knows he's going to go through a hard time now."
