Baker Takes Bray GP
Usher IRC rider Shane Baker got the better of Colm Bracken (Hillcrest Hire
Kilcullen) and his own team-mate Greg Swinand in the Bray GP, racing away from
his break companions in the closing stages of the 38 mile race.
The trio and 100 others took part in the handicap event, which saw juniors,
veterans and third category competitors set off one minute ahead of the senior
2 riders and a further minute up on the scratch bunch of first cats. The three
groups merged by the fifteen mile point, with a succession of attacks then taking
place. Baker, Swinand and Bracken slipped away just after the halfway mark and
opened up a one minute lead by the time they reached Kilmacanogue. Baker attacked
on the drag up to the finish at Rocky Valley Drive, opening up a good lead over
the other two riders and winning the first open race of the season. Mick O'Donnell
of the promoting Bray Wheelers club was fourth with another local, Dave Peelo
(Usher IRC) fifth. Philip Finegan (Cycleways.com) completed the top six.
