Fresh from a bold seventh overall in the Tour of New Zealand, Wilson added the Devonport Regatta Criterium to his growing list of credits. In a rather modest – although talented - field of riders, Wilson spread-eagled his opponents, lapping all but four chasers. Wilson – son of former Tasmanian Olympic road rider, Michael Wilson, barely raised a sweat in the 20 km street race, which is now in its sixth year and has become a feature event of the Devonport Regatta, which yesterday enjoyed its 48th year. Wilson completed the 25 laps x 800 m journey in the comfortable time of 27.31 minutes and almost had time for a cup of coffee before Will Robinson and Jarrod Harman led the chasing bunch home for the minor placings. “That felt good” was Wilson’s classic understatement. “My form over the last few months has been good and I’m looking forward to what’s on in the future.” Previous winners of the Devonport Regatta Criterium include Gareth Atkins (2001 & 2002), Mark Jamieson (2003), Darren Young (2004) and Nathan Clarke (2005) and while none of those topliners were present yesterday, they may not have caught Wilson anyway. The field started slowly, but Wilson let his intentions be known by about lap five…..from then on it was every rider for himself! Burnie’s Matthew McDonagh led the B Grade field home, whilst Launceston’s Grace Sulzberger was the first female to finish. No surprises in the junior divisions with Ben Grenda winning the Under 17s and Sam Brett collecting the spoils in the Under 15s.
