Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra Cycling ClubHaywards Bay, NSW, February 26, 2006Morris reigns supremeSuitable weather conditions combined with an excellent location and course for racing criteriums provide some very exciting racing at Haywards Bay last Sunday morning. All three grades had good numbers and enough riders who wanted to win to make the races very quick. The criterium king returned when Tim Morris edged Ben DuBois in the blue ribbon A grade race. The racing was led off by C grade, their race was 15 minutes plus two laps. At first the riders appeared a little apprehensive with the large bunch negotiating the tight corners but after a lap or two they were attacking the corners. There a few strong surges on the front by Hannah Lee, Peter Evans, Roger Phillips and Anthony Kneipp but the bunch was very attentive and no one gained more than a length or two. The front of the bunch was very crowded when the final lap bell sounded. Down the back straight Evans made his move with Lee on his wheel. Darren Gordon made his move through the bunch as they entered the finishing straight. The result was Lee from Evans and Gordon. In stark contrast to the previous race the B grade 20 minute race started off with a bang. Tony Pulo had a 100m gap on the bunch by the end of the first lap. As Pulo settled into his rhythm the bunch looked at each other to see who was going to chase him down. After ten laps the bunch was organized and had him in their sights. As soon as the catch was made Aaron Terechovs counter attacked. With so long to the end of the race it appeared a doomed move but he put his head down and gradually pulled away from the bunch with a determined effort. With four minutes left to race Mark Davis bridged across to Terechovs. With Davis in tow Terechovs continued on with his mission. With the final lap bell ringing in their ears Davis attacked down the back straight, despite another big effort from Terechovs he wasn't able to pull back Davis. First and second went to Davis and Terechovs. The bunch sprint was a cracker with Jason Johnson, Ian Robinson and Joe Chiaverini lined across the road, that was the finishing order. At the speed that A grade was lapping it seemed inconceivable that they would be able to keep it up for the full 25 minutes of the race but they did and more. The work on the front was evenly spread between the riders until one of the decided to attack. Tim Morris was the first on to try and get the gap. Knowing the danger that he posed the bunch was quick to respond. Graham Rutter was the next to slip off the front, he appeared to have some help in the bunch with Luke Dale blocking for him. When Rutter was caught Ben Yates flexed his legs. This constant attacking was continued by Jeff Gray, Dale and Ben DuBois. Peter Cooper bided his time and launched his attack in the closing stage of the race. All were to no avail as the bunch was together when they received the bell lap. Morris hit the front as they entered the finishing straight and crossed the line triumphant to the cheers of his daughter and wife. DuBois just held off a fast finishing Rutter for second place. Next week's races are 44.5km scratch races, two laps from Huntley to Calderwood road.
