A wet morning in Mulgrave cleared briefly in time for the 9am kick off at Glenvale Crescent, and sixty optimists took to the circuit in B, D and E Grades. Although the rain returned towards the end of the races, all three bunches handled the conditions well and the races were incident free. As the track became wetter, organisers took the tough decision to cancel the A and C Grade events – but none of the bedraggled riders hiding under the trees really seemed to mind!
The Univega Women’s team were out in force, with defending Commonwealth Games Road Race Champion Nicole Cooke joining regulars Priska Doppmann, CCCC member Emma Rickards, Christiane Soeder and Sara Duster on the line. Team manager Thomas Campana barked out the orders from the sideline, and the girls were quickly on the attack, with Doppmann and Soeder both driving in early breaks.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Doppmann launched another attack that only Wayne Andrew could follow. Next lap round, Boon Chia (Team Alex), Mark Kelly (BikeNOW) and Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion Bicycles) made contact and the five rider break drew ten seconds clear.
Troy McKinna was the last to cross the growing chasm after a determined two lap chase, but as is often the case, when the ‘three to go’ lapboard came out the bunch found its’ legs and after some big turns from James Shepherdson and Richard Cormick (both Burnley Finance) reeled in the escapees just before the bell.
Campana sent word that the Univega girls should “do the sprint for Emma”, and Doppmann, Soeder and Cooke set up an impressive lead out train that held off all comers and delivered their local rider to her ‘stop’ 150 metres from the line. Rickards finished off the team’s hard work with a good sprint, to hold off Andrew, Alister Stuart and CCCC’s Junior Development Coach Rob Tidey (O’Mara Cycles) for the win.
Nick Groves may well have had his last race in D Grade, after breaking away with Blackburn junior Tim Joiner midway through the race. The pair finished half a lap clear by race end, with the more experienced Groves too strong in the drag race to the line. First time rider Mark Mennen escaped the bunch in the final lap to finish third, and Daryl Beovic took the final place by winning the bunch sprint. Natalie Howard handled the wet conditions well to take the Women’s prize.
No points are awarded in the Inexa Summer Series (where over $7000 of prizes, including a complete Inexa Carbon C-2/Ultegra 10 and an X-1/105 10 bikes are up for grabs) unless all races can be completed, so Michael Vogt’s (47) one point lead over Tommy Nankervis remains unchanged. Kerrie Howard (34) leads the women in seventh place overall.
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue with Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown Racecourse. (Melways map 80J6). Racing at Sandown runs until the end of March, with the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start for all grades. Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2) with new start times for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
