Norwood Cycling Club
Criterium Series #1 - Regency Park, South Australia, November 1, 2005
It was great to see almost 110 riders taking part in the first criterium of the season hosted by the Norwood Cycling Club. Numbers were good in A, B and C Grades, with D and E Grades building slowly.
It was a quality A Grade field, with current State and NCC club champion Chris Luxton leading the large pack. It included Olympians Brett Aitken and Shaun Lewis, with Chris Jongewaard, Steve Cunningham, Peter Meuller, Mat Rex and last year's consistency winner Tom Baxter joining Julian Blackwell (among others) who have just returned from a long European season.
It was a furious pace from the starter's gun, and after 10 minutes of riding Jongewaard, Meuller and Will Dickison made their decisive move which would prove to be the race winner. There was no looking back as these three went on a rampage to destroy their chasing bunch. All three were certainly the riders to watch as they are on form having recently raced in Tasmania and Victoria to finish their road seasons.
Jongewaard took out the intermediate Bicycle Express - Cannondale prime sprint with ease, having won the sprinters jersey in Tassie. He then went on to show his superior sprinting ability to take the win over Meuller and Dickison. Stephen Cunningham managed a solo break from the bunch in the last ten minutes to take fourth, while Nick Wood sprinted the bunch home for fifth place.
