Jewel shines

Conditions couldn't have been much better than for the Tour de Huntley last weekend. The highlights of the day were the decisive victories by Mark Jewel and Adam Crowther in A & B grade respectively.

Jewel set up his win by riding one of the fastest 4km time trials on record (5:38.40) and then winning four of the six sprints on offer in the pointscore race. Tim Morris battled to reduce the deficit he had in the time trial but couldn't get any closer than seventeen seconds to Jewel. Graham Rutter was the only other rider to get away with Jewel and Morris in the pointscore race but only managed to pick up the minor placings from the two speedsters in the sprints. Overall it was Jewel, Morris and Rutter.

Crowther didn't record the fastest time in the B grade time trial - it went to Dave Russel in 6:16.99 - but he broke away from the bunch on the second of three laps in the pointscore, and not only won the remaining four sprints but finished 1.07 minutes in front of the chasers. Joe Chiaverini had been stretching his legs by winning a few sprints during the race, which gave him second place, with Russel third. There were fourteen riders in the C grade race, which made it very interesting. Phil Jones recorded the fastest time trial of 6:24.38.No one rider was dominant in the sprints, with twelve of the fourteen riders collecting sprint time deductions during the race. After all the times were calculated the top seven riders finished within 19 seconds of each other. Jones was declared the winner, only half a second in front of Dean Kelly. Joe Williams rounded out the top three.
