Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Norwood Cycling ClubPort Adelaide, South Australia, January 16, 2005Norwood Cycling Club took on an International flavour today in the first running of their South Australia Cycling Federation criterium at the new Port Adelaide circuit. A classy field turned out for A grade with the super fast professional COFIDIS riders Jans Koerts (Netherlands) and Staf Scheirlinckx (Belgium) leading the field. The speed around the circuit was sizzling from the countdown to go, with riders lapping the 900 metre circuit in just over a minute. The 24 A grade starters stayed mainly in a straight line, chasing each other until a few found it just too quick and ended their race.
Victorian rider Simon Clarke attacked off the front every time the pace eased as did Alan Gill at other opportune moments, with these riders finding the cornering very easy. Toward the end of the race the bunch splintered and the five placegetters managed to stay away; not surprising when you look at the quality of riders present. Staf Scheirlinckx controlled the second group of five riders for his team mate and Peter Herzig (Qld) tried in vain for ten laps solo riding to bridge the gap to finish sixth.
B grade also had a very impressive list of visiting riders, with a brilliant solo break away attempt by Peter Garrone, the Italian cyclist from Queensland. Garrone was away most of the race only to fade toward the finish. Strong turns from Katie Nichols (NSW), Michael Sneyd (Qld), and South Australia's Brad Simpson slowly pulled his 45 second break back.
There was a very positive response towards the new circuit, with riders enjoying the left and right hand turns. Taking this into account, a couple of small improvements could see some more exciting racing soon. A special thanks to all officials, Roger Blackwell, Eric Cook, Robert Fisher, Sam Gooding, Michael Harnett, David Roe, Helen Rex, Pat Bruce, Ann McGee, Bronte McGair, Barry Skinner and well done for a successful race to Jake Jacobs. Also thanks to all the riders for supporting this new event.
