Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra Cycle ClubScratch Race - January 16, 20052 from 2 for MorrisTim Morris maintained a perfect record in scratch races for the year by winning the second scratch race for 2005, out-sprinting a six-rider finishing bunch in Sundays 36km race. Graham Rutter looked the rider most likely to breakaway during the race. A Rutter attack on the third climb of Hooker Hill split the race, however, attentive riding from Mark Davis, Craig Paull and Morris prevented Rutter from establishing a lasting advantage. Of the eleven starters, six were left to contest the sprint with Morris edging Steve Franklin out for the win. Rutter claimed third place and Davis fourth. The B grade race, also run over 36km, saw Joe Chiaverini sprint away for the win. Frank Tortorici shared the bulk of the work, towing the bunch along with Lionel Covington and Alex Verdi. Nobody was able to make a break from the bunch and Chiaverini waited for his chance to jump from the pack in the finishing straight. Tortorici jumped onto Chiaverini's wheel but did not quite have the finishing burst to be able to round Chiaverini. Alex Verdi crossed the line for a deserved third place and Michael Commensoli finished fourth. Thirteen riders started in the C grade 27km race. Dave Morris is always keen to do his share of the work and was assisted by Anthony Kneipp, Joe Williams and Wayne Farrugia in keeping the pace high. Roger Phillips rode strongly each time the race climbed Hooker Hill and when Dave Morris broke away on the last ascent, Phillips sprinted past him opening up a 50 metre advantage. The race regrouped, returning down Hooker Hill and looking set for a bunch sprint. Anthony Kniepp surprised the sprinters by attacking with 1km to go - he looked to have won comfortably but punctured just 200m short of the line. This enabled the chasing Morris to catch him but Kniepp still managed to cross the line first with a flat tyre. Dean Kelly took third place with Farrugia fourth. Next week's race is the Tour de Huntley, which will have a change of format this year - a 4km time trial and 27km points race, including sprints at Hooker Hill and the finish line.
