Club Hill Climb, September 4, 2004
Wall sets new record
In a race designed for the truly masochistic, thirty three riders rode the Illawarra Cycle Club hill climb championship last Saturday. Under 19 Josh Wall set the road alight by taking 14 seconds off the course record he set as an under 17 rider in 2002. The new course record is 7:06:52. Seth Collins who is now racing in Spain set the previous U19 record in 1997. Wall is the current State hill climb champion.
In near perfect conditions five Club records fell.
In the Masters 4 event the first 3 riders were all under the old record. Michael Comensoli was justifiably happy with his ride when he took 1:08:03 off the old record only to see Hans Batteard come along eight minutes later to lower the record by a further 6 seconds. Frank Tortorici was third, still 30 seconds under the old mark. The previous record had been set in 1998.
Craig Paull rode the second fastest time on the day and lowered the Masters 2 record by 25 seconds to 7:48:03. Neil Williams had set the previous best time in 1999. Gil Rutty was second and Bobby Krstevski third.
Mark Davis improved on Marcus Arnold's 2000 record in the Masters 3 race by 6 seconds, setting the new mark at 8:32:35. Dave Russel and Dean Kelly filled the minor placings.
Not to be out done by her husband, Jenny Davis set a new record in winning the women Masters race.
Kerry Augustson went within 2 seconds of beating Kate Morphett's two year old record. Megan Wilkie was second only 2 seconds later.
Lionel Covington continues to improve with age, he lowered his own Masters 7 record he set 2 years ago by 15 seconds. His time was 9:45:28.
Tim Morris rode a solid race to win the Men's race in 7:59:14. Gavin Drury was second and Mark Jewel better known for his track racing was third.
Daniel Silveri and Anna Habeck won the Under 23 men's and women's races respectively.
Alex Verdi put in a big effort in clinching the Masters 5 event from Tony Stephenson.
Vince O'Dwyer left no one in doubt that he tried his hardest in winning the Masters 6 event.
From the non members that rode, Graham Rutter was fastest with 8:22:19, Matt Kubal was second and Thomas Griffith third. Griffith's time was the quickest that an under 15 has ridden.
Next week's race is a 45km scratch race. Entries close next week for the last race in the Interclub series, the Southern Highlands event. The race will be held at Breadalbane on September 18th starting at 2:15pm.
