Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra Cycle Club Scratch RaceNSW, May 29, 2004Pearson too strongMitch Pearson put in a big effort in last Saturday’s A grade 45km scratch and proved too strong for the rest of the bunch. Tim Morris was again in an aggressive mood as was Mark Jewel, Steve Franklin and Adam Rourke. In the occasional windy conditions it was Pearson who finally was able to break the hold of the bunch and ride away for an emphatic win. Jewel attacked the bunch and attempted to bridge to Pearson in the final few kilometres but couldn’t make it. Morris pipped out Franklin in a close sprint to take third place. There was no shortage of riders willing to have a go in the B grade race. Frank Tortorici tested the waters on the first lap with a strong attack that saw him away for another lap and a half. Brian Joyce and then Dean Marcinkowski were able to bridge across to Tortorici and it looked like that could be the bike race but some concerted chasing by the likes of Dave Russel, Ben Lohse and Austin Pitman brought the riders all back together on the fourth lap. In one of the closest sprint finishes in quite a while, Pitman pushed Marcinkowski all the way to the line but couldn’t quite overtake him. Lionel Covington was hot on their wheels just holding off a concerted challenge from Tony Pulo and Lohse. There was a good sized bunch for the start of the C grade race. On the first climb up Hooker hill the pressure was by Daniel Daly and Tony Burke that saw the bunch split in half. The lead group didn’t want the other riders to get back on so they kept the pace high. Dean Kelly, Mark O’Keefe and Kerry Augustson combined with Daly and Burke in maintaining a high average speed. The spectators were treated to another excellent sprint finish with Burke just not being able to peg back Daly and O’Keefe crossed the line in a close third place. The D grade bunch started the race with C grade and were able to keep up with the second half of the C grade bunch. Colin Shaw proved too strong for a tiring David Hull and Stephen Phillips crossed the line in third place. In tougher conditions than last week Les Hewitt was only 33 seconds slower his previous week’s time. A good effort. No local race next weekend. The Illawarra Interclub is being held on the Gunning-Breadalbane-Gunning course. The race is to start at 2:15pm sharp. The 12th of June is the inaugural Presidents handicap to be run over 45km. The total prize money pool is $500. There are no entries on the day so all entries have to be made to Lionel or Garry.
