Burke settles for third but leads the way

The Illawarra Cycle Club held their round of the Interclub series on the Gunning-Breadalbane-Gunning course on June 5th. A good sized field of 97 riders entered for the popular event.

In one of the most exciting finishes for quite a while Andrew Gilman (Macarthur) soloed over the line for a well-deserved win on 12 seconds in front of Dominic Mooney (Goulburn) with the fast closing pelotons only a further 4 seconds behind.

Tony Burke just held on to edge out Tony Pulo and Joseph Northey (Goulburn).

Gilman had started off limit and ridden the almost the entire 46km race distance by himself. Mooney also had little assistance from other riders and had plugged on trying to close the 5 minute gap to Gilman but only just failed by the 12 second margin.

The big movers in the race were the 20:30 minute group. Local riders Lionel Covington, Joe Pereira and Bobby Krstevski certainly added a lot of impetus to the bunch. The group had caught the two groups infront of them by just after the turn around and flown home.

The speed of the bunch was too quick for the group behind to close the 1:30 minute separating them.

Meanwhile at the rear of the race Tim Morris, Ben Smith (Goulbourn) and Richard Vollebregt were driving along the scratch group. By three-quarter race distance they had caught all the riders infront with the exception of the leading bunch.

The scratch bunch had the lead riders in their sights over the last few kilometres but was unable to close the final gap and crossed the line 53 seconds after the winner. Smith won the sprint for fastest time from Vollebregt with Morris asleep at the back of the bunch.

Burke is on equal points with Pulo for the overall series lead after race two. Smith is just ahead of Vollebregt in the fastest time competition. In the Club competition Goulburn (11) leads Macarthur (9) and Illawarra (8). Macarthur's Interclub race is next on July 17th at Gunning.
