Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Southern Veterans Cycling ClubJuly 4, 2004Coombe makes it two for the yearAndrew Coombe took a very commendable win in the Club Scratch races in B grade on Sunday to take his second major victory for the year. With the Norwood Cycling Club running an open event at Kangarilla with substantial prize money on offer the club was unable to run an A Grade this weekend but was still able to have a healthy field of riders compete in a very challenging and enjoyable days racing. Coombe has shown potential since a very impressive starting year in which he claimed an extraordinary ten major results. This year with the steady loss of handicap and moving up the grades he has not matched his first season but has continued to take an accomplished run of results with the more difficult company. He now has claimed four results in the last two months and at this rate of success could give his 2003 total a scare. Following Coombe to the line club stalwarts Paul Bell and Norman Hoy added to their result tallies to both move to four major results this season. C Grade saw Mark Benjamin take his first win for the year and continue his yearly tradition of a minimum of one victory per year since starting with the club in 2002. With the win coming early this time he will be eager to better his record. Stan Bastiras took second from leading club rider Gavin McMahon who has moved to a striking ten results for the season heading the club rankings. D Grade was a fine result for Geoff Bate claiming his first win for 2004 and his sixth major result of the season. Bate is heading towards another record breaking year following up his rousing 2003 in which he took eight major results that included a notable three victories. Bate held out a fast finishing and dangerous field to deny an in form Terry Proctor and Paul Weatherall a victory. Proctor is yet to break through for a first but has a very impressive pedigree with eight results last year and looks like he will not be far away. Weatherall has continued to be a regular in the places with his fourth today but is yet to take a win this year. He will be aiming to emulate his 2002 season in which he claimed seven results with four of these second places but would prefer four victories this time. Riders in E grade saw a change in the result on the line due to inexperience. The winning rider had not been aware that drafting with another grade is not permitted in scratch racing and was relegated to third as a result. Victory went to Richard Perin who had been the most aggressive out on the road leading the pack until late in the race. Perin claimed his second victory in scratch racing this year and third major result for the season. Second place went to a courageous Peter Blackburn returning after a major accident earlier this year and showing that he is back with a vengeance. Ian Hyde was the rider who was dislodged from first who was placed third and he will be pleased with this first result for 2004. Hyde had a very extraordinary 2003 taking 10 major results and looks to be back in winning form.
