Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Mildura-Coomealla CCRed Cliffs Cemetery circuit, July 4, 2004Beruldsen bulldogs FloramoGiles gets 'em homeBy Peter Winton Hello all. Time for another tale from the sweat-stung eyes resting behind a pair of Rudy's. In recent weeks I've harped on about a rider or two escaping the handicapper, well, our boy went up a bunch, into chopping block, and held off another "wolf in sheeps clothing", Nathan Floramo, to take out Saturday's road race. In almost bizarre winter season conditions of 21 degrees C and a strong northerly wind, 26 clubbies including another newcomer, Tom Sutcliffe, (yep, we keep finding them or perhaps they keep finding us) made the 25 km trip from Mildura out to the quiet backroads of south-west Red Cliffs. Well it wasn't so quiet with some steam-engine puffing billy enthusiasts breaking the serenity just up the road, we shared the countryside with them regardless. By the end of the day the steam-engines weren't the only ones puffing and blowing! What a day, a day of self-destructing bunches, of riders coming undone (muscle-wise), of aching lower backs from pushing into the unusual wind and it's direction. Not often we see Kevin Tankard dropped (not ever in my time), Rob McNally lying prone on a blanket post-race (suffering "Errol-itis" perhaps?), and a number of other good local riders reclining in their motor-vehicles, happy in the receipt of a "dnf". Now an explanation of the 72kms or perhaps 80Kms (heading). Somewhere along the way the 72km race of 9 laps at 8kms per lap turned into 10 laps of an unknown lap distance? How? Why? Who? If we ever find out I'll be sure to bring it to you. Nevertheless, the riders rode on and the lead group and scratchies completed the same distance so it didn't impact on the overall result. One by one, after about 4 laps, riders in each bunch dropped off the back. Not unusually, the limit bunch (at 22 mins) self destructs (well they do in our Club), the 12 min bunch started meltdown at about the same time. 9 minutes collapsed as soon as the chopping block rounded them up and Peter Doody was the only survivor of that capture. Subsequently, Peter Winton was the only (short term) survivor of the capture of his 12 minute group, although they had already taken a few "hits" and lost half the group. At the bell (really the non-bell lap, coz it wasn't rung) it was a pair of scratch markers only in Schmidt and McNally chasing the Giles-train of Beruldsen, Mills, Floramo and Doody. Mills the next to go off the back. From there it was stragglers by any number you like. In the end it was Beruldsen/Floramo/Giles until the big guy threw his arms up in the air in a gesture that I can guess meant "my legs are like jelly and I need some beer in my belly, that wasn't fun so now I'm going for a run". Beruldsen bull-dogged his way to the lead as Floramo straightened his back and grinned, happy with 2nd.
