Bruce escapes in the rain
With threatening, cold, windy weather it looked like a grim start to the criterium
season. Despite these conditions at the last minute quite a number of cyclists
fronted to race, making the same numbers for the first race as last season when
we had perfect weather. The racing was regimental with riders just strolling
due to the conditions just happy to race a crit and wait for the sprint finish.
B, C, D & E just rolled their time out and had their sprints to the finish.
A grade had a different approach, prior to the start everyone was given a warning
that if it started to rain the call would be given one to go. It started to
rain and as soon as Pat Bruce felt the first drop he went for it, solo, catching
everyone on the back foot. With just one lap to go no-one else had a chance
and Pat sewed up his first A grade criterium win, with Mat Rex easily taking
the bunch sprint.
