Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CCDecember 7, 2003Williams a shoe inAnother very strong ride from Craig Williams saw him take out the A grade 27.5km scratch race last Sunday. Williams was pushed all the way to the line by Graham Rutter with Steve Franklin filling out the top three. Thirty eight riders filled the four grades. A grade raced with A1 grade making it a large bunch of eighteen riders and a quick race. Frank Tortorici finished just off the back of the A grade winners to take out the A1 event with Mark Davis second and Keith Bennett third. Daniel Silveri continued his quick progression up the grades by winning B grade. C grade saw Paul Kaye just hold off Mitch Harris for the win. The speed of the A-A1 grade race was quite high which subsequently deterred too many attacks. The last climb up Hooker hill saw Williams, Rutter, Franklin and Tortorici attack and gap the field. The quartet stayed away all the way to the finish line with Franklin and then Tortorici just loosing contact with the others but still managing to keep infront of the chasers. In contrast, the B grade race had quite a few riders attempt to get away with Lou Caruana, Silveri, Alex Verdi and Warren Poole all quite active. Those four riders also did the lion's share of the work and chasing. Silveri started the sprint a long way out and no one was able to go with him. Caruana tried to close the gap but the line came too quick. Verdi was glued to Caruana's wheel but couldn't quite get over the top so had to be content with third. For the major part of the race C grade stayed together. But with just under 2km to the finish Kaye and Harris surged over a small rise and quickly opened up a sizeable gap on the field. Kaye had too much experience and speed for Harris and held him off for the win. Sal Caballo continued with his improvement and had a well deserved third. Next week's race is a 18km time trial with group 3 providing the marshalls.
