Local knowledge was used to perfection by Tasmanian riders Bernard Sulzberger and Caleb Manion in the penultimate stage of the Tattersall's Cup Jayco Tour of Tasmania. Sulzberger and Manion are both from the region and have used their backyard as a rigorous training venue for many years. On the second last day of the week-long tour, Sulzberger gave the local Tasmanian crowd something to cheer about when he outsprinted Manion and fellow breakaway riders for a stunning victory. "It feels great to get a win in a tour in your home state and even better when its so close to your home town," Sulzberger said. It was a similar scene to the morning's stage, with Tour leader Shaun Higgerson protecting his lead by sticking like glue to Clarke's wheel. "I'm this close to winning the overall tour that I can almost taste it," Higgerson said. "I'm not going to do anything silly from here."
The afternoon stage saw riders greeted to a tailwind from George Town, although as soon as they crossed the Batman Bridge and headed North to Beauty Point, the wind was in their faces. The Tasmanians, Bernard Sulzberger and Caleb Manion were joined in small break group by Scott Peoples, Johnny Walker and Sprint Championship leader Peter McDonald at around the halfway mark and quickly established a handy lead. The margin blew out to 55 seconds, and with Sulzberger and Manion having such an intimate knowledge of the terrain, it soon became obvious they were not going to be caught. Into the Beauty Point township and the tempo of the leaders increased, with Sulzberger and Manion kicking away from their fellow breakaways. Riders were greeted with a picturesque downhill sprint of 500 m to the finish line and the Tasmanians boxed on like two prizefighters. "This is one of the best wins, I've ever had, but its made even more special because its so close to home town," Sulzberger said. The tour continues tomorrow with the final stage, a 40 lap (34 km) criterium, with Higgerson probably given plenty of time to prepare his victory speech.
