Starting from its southernmost point in Potenza (675 m), the riders have to negotiate the Valico del Pietrastretta (840m, 7 km @ 4.75%) after 25.6 kilometres, before descending to Buccino (km 44.3). The next climb is at kilometre 63.6, although it is not categorised. The peloton will pass through Eboli, Battipaglia, Salerno and Avellino before starting the final ascent to Montevergine di Mercogliano (1270 m). This is an 11.5 kilometre climb that rises 538 metres at 4.68%. It is the first of three mountain top finishes.
