This popularity attracted a sizeable field of 113 riders, who braved a frosty morning to test themselves on a quick and moderately challenging course. The presence of 11 novices in the field and a large number of Sport C Men perhaps demonstrated the success of some of the CORC introductory rides held to familiarise new riders with this area. The mild, sunny conditions and mostly dry track were near ideal for racing. The 4.9 km full course and the 3.1 km novice course included some familiar singletrack, some rediscovered old tracks and some specially constructed new singletracks. These included 'Stoney Crossing' and the 'Easy Climb', which brought the riders to the top of the course. The full course contained some climbs sure to test riders as the race progressed. Eventual Senior Men race winner Shane Paton put in a scorching 14 minute and 19 second first lap to set up an unassailable lead. Paton completed the six laps in a time of 1:27:55. Dave Osmond attempted to keep the pressure on, lapping faster than Paton on the third lap, but in the end was unable to bridge the gap. Osmond eventually finishing over two and a half minutes behind. Rounding out the podium placings was Martin Mullin six minutes off the pace, but lapping consistently. Jacqui Clynes took out the Senior Women category in a time of 1:18:20, one minute and 16 seconds up on her only competitor Rosie Barnes. The Sport A Men field was large and competitive. First and second were separated by only 10 seconds, with a fast finishing Daniel Schlage just failing to haul in a consistently quick Matt Lees, who completed five laps in a time of 1:16:25. Similarly close were the Sport B Men and Veteran Men categories. Josh Bosschieter won Sport B by six seconds from Michael Johnson and Rod Higgins won Vets by 17 seconds from Gary Scheld. Congrats go to Paul Cole, Paul Mason and Paul Brodie for setting a course that made for close racing.
