The three members of the USA Cycling U23 Cycling Team present in Sonoma, California controlled the action of the U23 National Championship Friday morning, working together to distance themselves from the rest of the fourteen-strong field.
Sam Schultz, who has been present and placing in NORBA races throughout the 2006 season, was then able to break from teammates Sam Jurekovic and Colin Cares to grab the national championship jersey most recently worn by his brother Andy. The win earns Schultz a free ride to Roturoa, New Zealand as a member of the US National Team.
Later on Friday, the U23 women joined the pro women's race. 21 year-old Jenna Zander (Cannondale) was first U23 woman across the line with a time fast enough that she would have earned tenth in the 43-woman field if she had entered as a pro.
