Beechworth Six Hours in the Saddle
Beechworth Mountain Bike Park, April 9, 2005
The inaugural Beechworth Six Hours In The Saddle mountain bike enduro (you figure out the acronym) was held at the Beechworth Mountain Bike Park on April 9. Just a few kilometres out of town, the local community and the Beechworth Chaingang MTB club have created an exciting and challenging selection of trails, with the race well received by riders and spectators alike.
197 riders and their supporters set themselves up for the much warmer than usual day. With big numbers in the solos and pairs, nearly 100 riders would share 10km of track which contained some challenging rock sections, a few man-made obstacles and some energy-sapping climbs in the hottest part of the day. About 80% of the course was single track. In addition, the lucky starters had a few hundred metres of uphill firetrail to run before they could get their bikes.
One of the local inhabitants couldn't see what all the fuss was about and spent the day watching the riders from her vantage point in a tree above the finish line (see photo). It turned out to be pretty much a young rider's day, with 16 year old local Beechworth rider Nic Gladstone taking out the Solo Male category with a comfortable nine laps (or 90 Km) in just over six hours. Damian Richmond was 10 minutes back and Richard Ferris a further six minutes behind in third place. 18 year old Lindsay Gorrell, also on nine laps in 6:15:44 was the winner in the Solo Female by just over a minute from Justine Leahy. Lindsay's laps and time would have placed her third in the Solo Male! Alexandra Kiendl rounded out the top three women, with only eight minutes separating first from third.
With the surging popularity of endurance mountain bike racing, it looks like the bikes will be packed in the car for another weekend next year. The course had it's fair share of exciting jumps and berms which claimed a few casualties. There will be some sore bodies and nice bruises post race!
